Librarian note: there is more than one author with this name
Joe Casey is an American comic book writer. He has worked on titles such as Wildcats 3.0, Uncanny X-Men, The Intimates, Adventures of Superman, and G.I. Joe: America's Elite among others. As part of the comics creator group Man of Action Studios, Casey is one of the creators of the animated series Ben 10.
I am going to be honest and say I have no idea what just happened. I am not familiar at all with this world. But, I did see this was by Alex Ross and a quick look inside convinced me to grab this volume.
Project Superpowers is the story of a superhero group. This volume covers their enemies, hence the title. Each chapter (there are four) introduces a new villain, but since I was unfamiliar with the setting-new heroes as well. Without spoilers, I liked what I saw. The artwork is certainly impressive and greatly helped the enjoyment of this setting. Alex Ross has an eye for art.
The stories? They are all over the map from homicidal killer females to robot creations in service to a secret cabal. Each story is beautifully illustrated by a different quality artist and each story introduces a new villain and hero.
I enjoyed this volume. Even though I knew nothing about the source material, this volume has convinced me to see what the rest of the series is all about. I really enjoyed the artwork.
Four single issues focusing on a hero from Project: Superpowers along with a new villain. The main focus of each story is on the villains. Project: Superpowers is Alex Ross's baby, a world filled with heroes from the public domain.
Four of the heroes from Project: Superpowers meet their own personal demons in the form of new villains. The Green Lama faces a woman who blames him for a death in her family, The Fighting Yank meets a new patriotic power who needs guidance, Samson meets a God who is not his own, and the Scarab takes on the Supremacy of which he is a part.
You need to read the other Project: Superpowers stories first to know anything about these people. The stories are short and not overly developed. Just little vignettes to plant seeds of doubt in the heroes. Could be better if they were fleshed out more.
The villains from Project:Superpowers take the lead role in these four stories which includes the characters Bloodlust (issue 1), The Revolutionary (Issue 2), Dagon (Issue 3), and Robot Sentry (Issue 4).
To me Bloodlust and The Revolutionary were the two best characters introduced.
Hopefully these characters will show up in the new Project:Superpowers mini series starting in March.
