The Marriage Test

He Thought
Sean Fleming, world famous foreign correspondent, had found the perfect wife. His Andi would travel the world with him, waiting with open arms for his return each night. Not!

She Thought
Andi was ecstatic that Sean was ready to settle down. With any luck, he'd be stationed in a nice, quiet country where the two of them could raise a family. Not!

The Test

Six months later the honeymoon was definitely over. The only place Andi and Sean were compatible was in bed. In a last-ditch effort, they agreed to put their marriage to the test. Two weeks alone on a deserted island. Would it make them - or break them?

“This is turning into a French farce.”

Even the author knows how ridiculous this scenario is when the reconciliation of the H/h on the tiny island off the coast of Maine is interrupted by the hero’s mother, the heroine’s pregnant sister and the wanna be OM.

*Sigh*

H/h met and married during a two-week ski trip in the Austrian Alps. Hero is a star international tv reporter and heroine gives up her job to travel with him. She hates it and decides to call it quits when she moves back to Maine to care for her dying father. Hero finally tears himself away from his job to join the heroine long after the funeral and the serving of divorce papers.

Since heroine can’t stay out of his bed, she decides to set a marriage test. They’ll go to the family cabin and live like an ordinary couple for two weeks and see if their marriage can survive all that togetherness.

Hero thinks he can charm his way back into the heroine’s good graces, but finds it an uphill battle when he packs the wrong food, falls off the roof and refuses to join the heroine in her boring nature watching. Yes, our hero is a manic-pixie guy. Creative, charmingly selfish with no common sense or practical skills.

Heroine is despairing of their chances until the entourage of side characters shows up. Heroine’s sister ends up giving birth during a storm and manic pixie guy is rock solid. Marriage solved!

Hero’s mother decides to stay in Maine and be honorary grandmother to the heroine’s sister’s family. H/h will got to London where heroine will work for the shopping network (how 90’s!) and hero will be a news bureau chief. (And assist at births in his spare time?) Wannbe OM bows out gracefully. There’s a baby for the H/h in the epilogue.

Anyway, the plot was original, I guess. Just a bit too whacky for my tastes and nothing was ever resolved for the H/h, really. I think they just decided to tolerate their opposites-attract dynamic and hire a housekeeper.

After a whirlwind romance their marriage didn't turn up how Andi and Sean expected it. In a short time they've grown completely apart. Andi decides to take one last shot at it and takes Sean to a deserted island where they have to rough it up a bit, so they cannot do anything but finally communicate.

Normally this would be my kind of story - second chance romance, uncivilized location, but the writing style wore on me, and I never really warmed up to Sean and Andi.
