A Quickie Review

Part of a sort of "expanded universe" for High School Musical, this book is true to the spirit of the movies; at least, the first two, which are the only ones I've seen so far. People who don't care for the franchise probably won't like it, but, for Disney Channel fans like me, this is at least somewhat enjoyable.

Score: 3/5

easily the best read of the year so far. the only thing i see topping it is the 7th book in the series bc that new girl is giving drama! tbh i needed this fanfic because i’m currently in a state of delusion and it was fun to read something that matched that energy!

Twenty some years ago, I took a children's lit class, and we were required to read some of the "pop lit" series to get a fuller understanding of what was available. This book definitely qualifies as pop lit. It is part of the High School Musical franchise, which I have not seen or followed, so I am completely unfamiliar with the characters or East High. Compared to other pop lit, like Babysitters Club or Goosebumps, this is a very uninteresting book. The characters are templates or stereotypes, the emotions are one dimensional, the plot is very bland, and the high school spirit portrayed here is so Disney-fied to be unreal. I realize this is a book for fans of the movie, and for reluctant readers, this might be a way to hook them. Otherwise, I think there are so many much better pop lit and well-written books. I will be reading one more as my children's lit professor had suggested (read two of each kind to get a better feel for the series), but I don't anticipate it will excite me any more than this one. I don't recommend it for adults at all or for most tween readers, but it has it's role in developing reading interest I guess.

This story didn’t really wow me . Again it felt like girls vs boys in storylines. Troy and Gabriella are still bumbling their way through their relationship

An interesting and developed story, this author has really captured the characters throughout. This felt like a side story to the films and it was so great to read.
