The clear writing style and photographs cover the symbolism, significance and importance of Remembrance Day in this thorough, yet brief book. This book is age appropriate for young children as it focuses on remembrance and not on the horror of war. There are no graphic or upsetting photographs included.
It touches on Remembrance Day’s beginning as Armistice Day, King George’s request that two minutes of silence be observed, the wars, peace keeping missions, poppies, The Last Post and The Reveal, cenotaphs and ceremonies and John McCrae to name a few subjects. This is not a book to educate children about the wars themselves and very little detail is given regarding them, rather the focus is on the sacrifices of the soldiers and the importance of remembering them as well as the symbolism of all the things they are likely to see at a Remembrance Day ceremony.
Typical of the publisher there is a map, as well as a hands on activity for students to do, followed by a set of comprehension questions.
