I always find accounts of honour killing fascinating. Something so unnatural that appears to be so normal in some societies. Sofia had a terrible childhood, her parents relentlessly pounding in to her the importance of maintaining family honour at all costs.
Thankfully she escapes, first to university where her parents find her and send a hitman to try and kill her and then to London where her passion for performing is made clear. Here she mingles with celebrities and begins her new life as

Sofiat tapma. Kogu traumat kirjeldati üsna pinnapealselt, suuremate emotsiooniteta. Pigem keskendus Sofia sellele, kuidas t ...more

I picked up this book, thinking it would be a harrowing recount of a terrible life...
Sad to say, I, unfortunately, didn't feel that at all.
Sofia Hayat is apparently a household name.
Not in my household.
And I live in Gravesend, the place she was born and brought up in. I started this book, and a sense of connection formed when I read that she was born in Gravesend.
I felt a little sorry for her as she recounted the events of her childhood, but I'm afraid she lost me as soo

I won a copy of this via goodreads first reads.

This is a powerful book that involves both the British Muslim community and the criminal classes. It is a story where honour is used to condone control, violence & even murder.

Laila lives with her uncle who controls her every action, or tries to, so he sends her Pakistan to marry a man after his own heart. It also tells the stories of Tash, Ray Ray & Freddie & their involvement with the serial killer Arnold. Their lives brie
