There's a good reason that the wealthiest Americans protect their fortunes using trusts, family partnerships, limited liability structures and corporate entities because they work. In today's litigious society, anyone can be sued and anyone can have their lifelong savings and real estate nest-egg attacked and attached by a court, a creditor, a lender, an accident victim, an ex-spouse, a neighbor, or a hostile business partner. These real and present threats exist for anyone with assets not just the wealthiest "one percent." The first step in Asset Protection is educating yourself . This book will help you do just that educate yourself about Asset Protection and proper Asset Protection planning. Financial Self-Defense (Revised Edition) provides the reader a complete step-by-step primer on the practical and effective strategies they can take to insulate every type asset from losses due to lawsuits, divorce, foreclosure and other financial disasters. The book also demonstrates the need for defensive planning and how defensive planning can be advantageously integrated with estate, investment and other financial planning objectives. Financial Self-Defense also highlights many of the common mistakes that people make which increases their liability exposure and further endangers their wealth.
The book is a decent marketing piece, but there are a lot of books that describe the "how" better than this one. It is also getting dated (the 412(i) plan referenced in the book, for instance is now 412 (e) and changed somewhat). Most people picking one of these books up knows the why - or at least is informed enough to understand they have an issue. They are looking for some hows and Presser delivers that with 50,000 foot perspectives. If you are completely new to the topic, you'll pick up a few useful nuggets. Otherwise, look elsewhere.
