The Essential Wisom of the Saints

Rate this book
The saints have been a great source of consolation and instruction since the early days of Christianity. Through their guidance, protection, and intercession, they prove perpetually ready to help us prevail in our personal struggles—be they earthly or spiritual.

The Essential Wisdom of the Saints gathers together hundreds of memorable quotations that express the fundamental beliefs of these extraordinary men and women, beginning with the first saints and extending to those canonized only within the last decade. The selections are arranged thematically and reflect subjects that were most important to the saints themselves and that continue to have special meaning for all of us:

•St. Thérèse of Lisieux expresses her childlike trust in God and encourages us to do the same
•St. Thomas Aquinas offers insight into the enduring struggle between body and soul
•St. John of Avila reflects on the meaning of suffering
•St. Paul encourages us to remain humbleThe saints also offer insights on topics such as how to pray, the need for charity, the importance of forgiveness, the pitfalls of the material world, and the significance of sainthood itself.

Whether you’re looking for guidance in your own spiritual journey, for an extra measure of inspiration to get through the day, or simply to learn more about the thoughts and words of these great men and women of God, The Essential Wisdom of the Saints is a moving collection that you will turn to again and again.

Was going to read this but noticed the author also wrote "Essential Wisdom" books on Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton... uhm, yikes? Major cringe.

I found this at a library sale - what a gem! I liked it so much that bought all seven copies I found on a used book site and plan to give them from friends. These pearls of wisdom from the saints who've gone before us are excellent guides to life and eternity.

The book gathers together hundreds of memorable quotations that express the fundamental beliefs of these extraordinary men and women who are no saints. The quotations are arranged under various themes such as love; prayer, faith and hope; virtue; humility and simplicity; charity; obedience; peace and joy; human nature; sin and forgiveness; the material world and poverty; knowledge and intellect; suffering and death; sainthood; God. It is a short book that one can read quickly but return to it for guidance and meditation, as well as for prayer.

Although this book is only about 107 pages long, it took me about a week to read. It is a collection of short quotes by many different saints. I found myself stopping after each quote to ponder it's significance and how it applies to my life. Overall, I would suggest this book for anyone looking to explore their faith or Christianity in general.

I enjoyed reading the words and thoughts of these holy men and women. It inspired me to learn more about several saints, including Saint Padre Pio.
