Rate this book
Divulging the rich tradition of homosexuality in the arts from an unabashed perspective, Gay Art represents a unique effort in the art publishing market whose cultural relevance will ensure its success. It is a scientific study led by Professor James Smalls who teaches art history in the prestigious University of Maryland, Baltimore. The author highlights the sensibility particular to homosexuals, and abandons all classical clichs and sociological approaches. This book examines the process of creation and allows one to comprehend the contribution of homosexuality to the evolution of emotional perception. In a time when all barriers have been overcome, this analysis offers a new understanding of our civilisations masterpieces.

A great book to get an overview of homosexuality and art throughout centuries. Very interesting to explore the general links between art movements, religious beliefs, the role of men and women in society, the power of western societies over eastern ones, all in connection to same sex relationships.

"Gay Art" von James Smalls bietet eine aufschlussreiche und wissenschaftlich fundierte Reise durch die Kunstgeschichte, die den homoerotischen Ausdruck sowie die Entwicklung queerer Identität von der Antike bis zur Postmoderne untersucht. Es ist ein reich illustriertes und unverzichtbares Standardwerk für alle, die sich für Kunstgeschichte jenseits der traditionellen heteronormativen Perspektive interessieren.

It's not bad. I just don't feel like reading it anymore, because it requires a lot of brain power with this advanced English. I learned much from it, however it's more a history of homosexuality and homophobia with added paintings. I may finish it one day, when I have free scribbd again.

Overview of homoerotic art through the ages. Features many works of art that are widely recognized. No new insights.
