When a nurse in Buffalo dies at St. Paul's Hospital of a once-treatable bacteria, Dr. Earl Garnet and his colleagues try to remain calm. They track the origin of the sickness to University Hospital. But as the infection rages out of control there and more people fall gravely ill--including Garnet's own wife--Earl uncovers a shocking connection between the victims.
KILLING GROUND
Throughout the community, panic and paranoia spread as wildly as the outbreak itself, and the entire University Hospital staff is quarantined. Yet the mastermind who created this deadly superresistant strain may be someone they know, someone locked within the barricades. Now the sociopath has threatened to infect fifty more people. And that will be only the beginning. . . .
DEATH ROUNDS
No one captures the complex workings of an urban hospital like former ER physician Dr. Peter Clement. His new medical thriller ranges from the realm of microbiology to raw, human rage--in a plot so chillingly authentic it could be happening right now. . . .
The plot line was good, but way too much medical jargon...if anybody needs intubating, I can do it... There was also too much explanation; I don't need every step the character takes described to me...
Meh. It was okay--a solid 2.5. Was glad to finish it. Medical thriller with an evil guy trying to shut down a hospital by infecting people with Vancomycin resistant Methicillin Resistant Staph Aureus AND Legionella. Worst thing about this book was the dialogue--it was terrible. Otherwise, this book by an ER Doctor was reasonably written. Best thing about this book were all the parts about surgical masks and how f#ck&ng annoying it is to wear them constantly in an effort to prevent infection--very timely --book written in 1999. Surgical masks play a role in the Villain's dastardly plans! Will say no more in case you want to read this. The mask thing was fabulous. I also liked the parts that happened in the pitch black creepy dark basement of the University Hospital with the abandoned Insane Asylum.
Appreciate that this Doc wanted to write fun books that other doctors and nurses would like so rounding up a half star as I hope to do the same.
I've got good news and bad news: The good news is that this is a great story. The bad news is that it was almost unbearably tedious.
I only finished this by skim-reading entire pages as fast as I could. The plodding and repetitive details were pervasive. Many, many times I wanted to just give up. But the story itself kept me hooked.
I love medical novels. But it is scary to know “what if”. I doubt I’ll be around to live through it and I’m glad but it’s a scary thought for my kids & grandkids. I really enjoyed reading this book & look forward to my next Peter Clement novel.
So many spelling errors but the author was good so I stayed with him.
The story was written very well and I enjoy it. However I figured out who the quilty person was halfway through the book. I had hoped I was wrong. However the author made the ending very enjoyable.
Gripping, suspense till almost the end, but was able to get a hint who the villain was by process of elimination toward the end. Nevertheless a good thriller
This will keep you guessing who the culprit was right up until the end of the book. A book I was unable to put down and I will be reading more from this author!
In 'Death Rounds', all hell breaks loose upon the bacteria-induced death of a nurse at St. Paul's Hospital. Although Dr. Earl and other staff members do their best to prevent the bacteria from spreading, more people are getting infected. Earl's wife, Janet believes there is nothing accidental about this alarming outbreak. As Earl embarks on an investigation to identify the perpetrator, it is only a matter of time before the bacteria or the killer gets to him..
Fast-paced and jam-packed with intense moments, this medical mystery was engaging right from the beginning. The sombre atmosphere coupled with the mass panic at the hospital was beautifully conveyed throughout the story. As the suspense gradually ratcheted up, several questions came to mind such as: Who's deliberately infecting the staff and patients? What's his or her motive? How does he or she do it without drawing any attention? Being in Earl's head as he searched for the pieces of the puzzle and put them together was an exciting journey. Best of all, the explanations made sense.
There was a generous pool of suspects that made it challenging to figure out which one of them was the wolf in sheep's clothing. Furthermore, several of them could have pretty solid motives. The whole situation namely the fear of getting infected by an untreatable bacteria was portrayed realistically. It was so well-written to the point where I could actually put myself in the characters' shoes and understand just how afraid they were. In a way, this scenario is scarier than say, a killer wielding a knife because this perpetrator was in plain sight, armed with a lethal weapon that could be easily concealed.
One of the few things that detracted from my enjoyment of the story was how Janet instantly realized there was someone behind the infections. Her reasoning was flimsy and at that early stage, unconvincing. I didn't particularly like Earl especially because like his wife, he was quick to jump to conclusions (except that she was right in the aforementioned conclusion). He was biased in his investigation too but for the most part, he was alright. The showdown scene was brilliant except that like many other books, the author chose to slightly dumb down the villain and make him or her loquacious.
Overall, 'Death Rounds' served up a thrilling mystery filled with a host of suspects, a believable motive and one hell of a creepy murderer. This book will definitely make anyone think twice before stepping into a clinic or hospital.
This is a well-written, well-researched medical mystery centering in two busy hospitals in Buffalo, New York. I like this author's writing style, the way he made me feel like a part of the hospital staff both in the board room and in the emergency room. I made a point of getting the rest of the books in this series and am really looking forward to reading them.
With that cover I knew I was going to love this medical thriller but I was disappointed. Obviously, the medical information was dated...but I'm a mystery reader who likes to be surprised and I wasn't.
It was a fun read. I love medical thrillers and the insight into a hospital environment. The killer was pretty obvious to me, making this less suspenseful than his other books, but I still enjoyed it.
A thriller about one of my favorite themes...Mean cruel people get paid back! In this case however, they are getting killed! Not my choice, but made for great reading. Loose ends get tied up nicely.
Just starting to get into this series but love it so far. I like medical thrillers if they seem real,.since he is a.former doc he really shows the dark side. Love it!
Found the plot of this novel rivitting, and it always kept me on the edge of my seat ... a fictional plot that's so close to the truth it's frighteningly tantalizing.
