This is the first book in Lara Adrian's Black Dagger Bro- oops, I mean Midnight Breed series.
The series is about a group of huge, badass (but good) vampires who live together in a compound and fight evil vampires in order to protect their really old fashioned, hoity toity race. They wear leather and carry really hard core weapons, and go on patrol every night to kill the enemy. When they find their mate, they share blood to stay alive. I don't know how I got that mixed up with JR Ward's series.

So this is my second time reading Kiss of Midnight. The first time was like back in 2014 I think so I thought it was time for a reread and catch up on the new books in the series. The 1st time I read Kiss of Midnight I gave it 5 stars but I am only giving it 4 this time around. See even thought it's still a damn good read, there were a few things that bugged me this time around that didn't really bug me back then. Mainly the thing that really bugged me was how hot and col

My Thoughts:

This novel was remarkably unremarkable. Don't get me wrong, it didn't suck but I'm not exactly about to clean out the Lara Adrian section at the local bookstore. The set up is pretty generic, like Adrian got tips from "Vampire Romance 101". You've got the big baddies (Rogues) & the group of men fighting to annihilate the big baddies. There personalities are even generic(at least on the surface). There's the leader, the badass, the geek, the smartass, & the suicidal loner. The hero of

Great take on the Vampire legends!

I really Like this series. It has a bit different take on the evolution of Vampires. They evolved from aliens who crash landed thousands of years ago and didn’t have the constitution for animal or plant life on Earth. The only food source being human blood. Eventually after much time, certain women with a special trait, characterized by a teardrop shaped birthmark were able to give birth to alien-human hybrids (male vampires). These men of the breed continue to

I really enjoyed this book. Yes, it’s a blatant rip off of the Black Dagger Brotherhood, and while reading it I felt like I was cheating on my beloved Brothers, but I had been warned about that beforehand and because I was prepared for it, it probably didn’t bother me as much as it would of if I was going in blind. Plus I’m such a massive fan of the BDB that I’m guaranteed to love anything that even slightly resembles it! Although I did roll my eyes in disgust when the heroine referred to the he ...more

Good book and very imaginative storyline. Adrian really developed a unique concept of vampirism and vampire society. Although the warriors remind me of the Black Dagger Brotherhood, they are not carbon copies, and the Midnight Breed series is claiming its own place in the paranormal romance genre. I love warriors, and these guys are definitely creme de la creme. One thing that bothered me was the casual indifference about humans being killed by the Rogues. The Breed warriors did protect humans, ...more

Before starting my review I admit….. upfront…that……..I AM THE ULTIMATE FAN OF JR WARD’S BLACK DAGGER BROTHERHOOD SERIES….finishing her latest book, LOVER UNLEASHED, and in limbo waiting for her next book which will be released in March 2012, I looked around for some books in same genre that I could read in the meantime.
Kiss of Midnight by Lara Adrian was recommended so decided it to give it a try. I also read a few reviews about this book, mostly good but the one thing that kept coming up was ho

On the surface, this book is everything you would expect from a good urban fantasy / paranormal romance novel. It has a quirky heroine, good and evil vampires, and quite a lot of smut. But again I feel like this book is nothing but the combined works of J.R.Ward, Sherrilyn Kenyon and Kresley Cole. It wasn't bad but I got nothing out of it, the story wasn't particularly different or clever and the characters were reincarnations of a thousand others that have graced the urban fantasy scene.

A poorly executed BDB.

I had my eyes on this for a long time and I said “Heh! Why not try it now? Seems like it’s pretty popular so it might be good.” So I gave it a try aaaand it wasn’t what I expected it to be…

The intro was pretty good; I thought Lucan was a really nice character. He was acting all ninja assassin, slicing through bad guys and being all mysterious and stuff. I like these things so it got my hopes up. And then the story began. *yawns*

Introduction blah blah blah introduction *yawn

Kiss of Midnight is a vampire romance I read at the end of my PNR reading era.
The emphasis is on the end. It couldn't grab my attention enough to continue the series, but it was enjoyable. I guess if I had read this earlier, I would have liked it better.

If you like Black Dagger Brotherhood, have I got the book for you! This one....Yeah, you probably figured that out.

The similarities are eerie. Well, maybe not eerie, but it's almost Halloween so I think everything is eerie right now. My dog's capacity for shedding every season of the year is eerie. So is my capacity for eating chocolate... mmmm, Halloween = candy.

So, we have a race of vampires, and the focus is on this small group of warriors. They are a close group - a brotherhood if you wi

4 1/2 "Scarlet Kiss 💋" Stars!

I LOVED this book! Dark and sensual. A tiny bit scary (but I'm a scaredy cat, so...). Great world building.

Lucan was broody and stubborn, but sexy and protective. Gabrielle was smart and patient. I loved them both. This series is going to be so addictive for me. There are at least two Order Warriors whos books I cannot wait to read already. I think the overall series plot is going to be good too. I can't believe I waited so long to start this series. Excited to see

I’ve been meaning to start this series forever and it didn’t disappoint. Gabrielle spent her childhood in the foster care system after her mother had a mental breakdown shortly after her birth and claimed she’d been attacked by vampires. (For fans of the BDB, you’ll find similarities in this series. I was pleasantly at home.) Lucan is one of the warrior vampires, who with his band of brothers, is charged with hunting down rogue vampires who have been lost to blood lust and are harming humans.

I really enjoyed this vampire read.
Plenty of room left open for this storyline to continue through the series.
In other words... read this series in order.
There was enough action and excitement to keep me interested beyond the romance.
I was annoyed by the amount of time it took the H to realize the his true feelings for the h. But, given their pretty quick initial attraction, I guess we needed something to drag the romance aspect out for the rest of the book.

At the risk of been torn to shreds by the BDB fan's, I much preferred this book.

I will definitely be continuing on with this series.

There are definite similarities between this & BDB without a doubt. (she even called her man her "dark lover" at one stage!)
But if like me you hated the silly names, despised the Lessers and thought the slang & carry on of the brothers was a bit cringey then this is the series for you.
You still get the great elements you expect from PNR. An alpha male, a strong fe

I decided to give kiss of midnight a chance after reading a few reviews that compared it to JR Wards "Black Dagger Brotherhood series". So in the beginning this book was already doomed, since i am admittedly an avid reader of The BDB Series. Even if that wasn't a factor in my decision, i still would of found this book to drag on more than it should have. Don't get me wrong, I'll still move on to the next book in the series but unfortunately it will not be a priority. Let me just say..... This se ...more

I don’t have the best track record with Paranormal Romance novels – this is why.

It’s not a horrible story or anything, and if Paranormal Romance is your gig, you should enjoy it. For me, though, the reasons I don’t care for the genre shined through, spoiling the better possibilities the book contained.

Gabrielle and Lucian are struck by instalove and instalust to a degree – it’s one of those ‘ in the stars ‘ things. Like the Carpathian novels sort of, but to a less obsessive degree, when the vam

Starts with action at the prologue.

A very different take on 'Vampires'!

I loved it just as much my 2nd time around as I did my first read.

I did something different this time and used both audio and ebook to read it.
I have to admit my GR friends who keep telling me to use audio have finally got me interested in it. It helped me to enjoy the story while I got other things done.

I've heard many different things about this series. Some have said that it's great while others have vehemently disagreed. I've heard that this is too much like J.R. Ward's Black Dagger Brotherhood series while others think that it's not like BDB at all. These differing opinions both came from people that I trust and who have the same taste in books as me. So I was a little hesitant to read this, least of all buy it; so I borrowed it from a friend. I'll probably go out and buy it for myself tomo ...more

According to my Kindle, I am 10% of the way through this book, and I just don't think I can continue reading it. I got through some slightly hokey vampire moments, but I think that one has a certain forgiveness for that sort of thing in this genre. But at the 10% mark, I lost all respect for the heroine, and that I can't forgive. She is supposed to be a professional photographer of some local acclaim (local being Boston, by the way, so we aren't talking small potatoes), however, when the hero go ...more

Kiss of Midnight is the first book I've read by Lara Adrian. I found that the first book of the Midnight Breed series was interesting. I couldn't help but think that there are some similarities to the BDB. However, Adrian is capable of holding her own. Her writing just flows so beautifully. It seems almost effortless.

I will admit that I thought that the first part of the book was kind of slow. I was interested in knowing what would happen to Lucan and Gabby but it seemed to take a long time for

Sometimes you just gotta reread some of your favorites. Especially during a pandemic. So, I dived into the Midnight Breed series...again. Comfort books, ya'll.
The Breed are vampires. They feed on humans, then erase their memories. Unless they are the evil Rogues. Then they drain the humans. Our hero is among a group of warriors that fight the Rogues and make sure humans never know about their kind. They rightly fear the damage that would be done if humans ever found out. Humans far outnumber t

I first read this many moons ago and I remember enjoying it, not so much this time around

After reading several books with Alpha possessive heroes who refused to even let their woman go to far away, Lucan pushing the h away so much irritated me. To make matters worse he knew she was a Breedmate and thought she'd eventually have a family with another Breed yet he kept sleeping with her? Um no
And the h just accepted everything, he disappeared for a few days.... Well that's ok sh

I’m not going to say that I didn’t get into this book because I did. I was interested right at the beginning and I stayed interested even when I wasn’t quite sure what was going on. The characters were what I had a hard time connecting with. Lucan sounded sexy and alpha but then he also seemed wishy washy which is never a favorite characteristic for me. Gabby was great but I couldn’t understand her need to put herself in harms way over and over again.

★★★½☆ (This is a review of the audiobook.) When the opportunity to do this one as a “buddy read” came up, I thought I’d give it another shot. Especially since I was in a better frame of mind than last time. I also want to pick this series back up and thought I’d “refresh” my memory. So I did a “re-read via audio.” Hillary Huber does alright on this one, but nothing spectacular. She has a wonderful voice, an excellent tone, and does a nice job on the international accents; howeve

It's funny to me, as I write this review some ten years after the book's release, that there's a cover quote by J.R. Ward on the cover. I either hadn't realized, or hadn't remembered. What I do know is that I first read this book around the time I was obsessed with the Black Dagger Brotherhood by J.R. Ward. OBSESSED. And it didn't live up to the over-the-top love that I had for that series at that time.

This book was released on 2007, about the time that Butch's book

This first book in the Midnight Breed series had a promising premise, but Adrian really missed the mark. I have a feeling that she was trying to live up to the hype of JR Ward's phenomenal Brotherhood vampire series, but she really falls short. I would also say she was trying to appeal to those fans and perhaps give an overall "Thank You" to Ward, but there are too many similarities and that's where it ends.

There is no chemistry between our two main characters, their passion falls flat and the

“Maybe she should cut the guy a little slack, [...] Maybe Thorne had been a no-show because something bad happened to him on the job.

What if he'd been injured in the line of duty and didn't come by as promised because he was incapacitated in some way? Maybe he hadn't called to apologize or to explain his absence because he physically couldn't.

Right. And maybe she had checked her brain into her panties from the second she first laid eyes on the man.”
