Usborne Very First Reading

The fourteenth title in the new "Usborne Very First Reading" series, designed for younger children to introduce them to reading together with their parents. Parents and children take turns to read from the page (the text clearly marked for who should be reading) and as the books progress in the series the adults read less and less and the child more and more. There are puzzles at the end to check the child's understanding of the text and guidance notes for the parents. Beautiful illustrations help to motivate beginner readers.

About the author

Lesley dreamed of being a writer, but studied law as her mother insisted she had "something to fall back on". Since joining Usborne Publishing, she has written and edited hundreds of books, from funny rhyming stories to an award-winning history book. Nowadays, she is often found recording books, too, in Usborne's very own recording studio.

My son (4) is in an in-between stage where basic picture books don't always hold his interest but he isn't reading yet. He's recognizing letters and a few sight words and that's so far.
I found this series at the library, and it seems like good easy reader material. I got it because my son is interested in knights right now. He was pretry excited about it, and liked playing the little games at the end (which work as reading comprehension drills even for those who aren't reading yet). We will look for more in the series.

2.5/5 Fun, rhyming story for developing readers aged 6+ Even though this is part of the usbourne 'very first reading' series it contains some complex words that are not easily decodable for younger/beginner readers so adult support may be needed when first reading the story!
