Owen: I liked when they defeated the bad guy and it was like, "here's your oooaaaars!" When Willy was in the water he was a wet Willy! That was really funny. I liked when the Greens offered them to move to where they lived. It was nice. I learned a lot about the pioneers. I like them. They're really cool and brave. Oliver was as brave as Joseph Smith. I was really happy that they got to build the temple. I like that we got to build the temple over again when it was done with the bad stuff (reconstruct the temple after it was destroyed).
Mom: Lookout Brigade is a fictional story based on the boys of the whistling and whittling brigade. These boys patrolled the city of Nauvoo while the men hurried to finish the temple after the death of Joseph Smith. Nauvoo had lost its city charter and therefore didn't have a legal militia. There were many people opposed to the church that were trying to stop the building of the temple and run the Mormons out. These boys kept the city safe and made it possible for the work in the temple to progress. I was aware of these events, but I also learned a lot from this book. I loved sharing this story of brave boys with my boy. We got to talk about standing up to bullies and how even kids can do important jobs. I also loved sharing a story where the bad guys are beat without fighting. I think it is important to to teach my son the history of our church and people while he is young. I hope it will help him to have empathy towards others who may be persecuted for their beliefs.

Oliver Evans a breathtaking carver, is part of The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter Day Saints. When a mob comes and burns down his house his family is miraculously left with a couple belongings, some food, and even more miraculous, their lives. A kind neighbor picks them and their livestock up the next morning, and he offers to let them stay at his house in Nauvoo. Oliver knows when his parents accept the offer, that everything will be different. When he arrives he hears of a group of boys called the Whistling and Whittling Brigade. He gets very excited until he is confronted with a problem that might result in life or death.
This is a children's book about the young boys who whittled and whistled threatening strangers out of Nauvoo after the city charter was annulled by the state. It gives some good historical facts, plus is a good story.
