About the author

Mario Salmi (14 June 1889 – 16 November 1980) was an Italian art historian and art critic who specialized in Romanesque architecture, Tuscan sculpture and the early Italian Renaissance.

In 1949, Salmi established the art review journal Commentari. He was also supervisor of the 15-volume Enciclopedia Universale dell'Arte, published from 1958 to 1967, which was soon translated into English as The Encyclopedia of World Art.

The earlier (1966), heavier-paper version of this book is a must-own. All levels of Michelangelo's genius are examined. Portico floor plans that conducted light inversions, endless sculpting metaphors, even the animated nuances of his painting skills are enhanced: in one corner David holds a blade high above Goliath's away turned head, and in another, Judith holds aloft her General's head as she departs his quarters where his body sprawls dead. The beheading act flows from one to the other. Intricate details of the back wall's revelation are magnified.
