Fairly thorough introductory technical text. Some could argue the author extends some subjects longer than necessary for a cultural history while glossing over other subjects of interest without footnoting the decision or citing where current historians are on the matter being discussed. The only entry level text book on the subject that I've seen that has decent, dry, plain style prose that covers the history of codes through a critical/sociocultural lens.

A solid survey of the subject that reads like a 'Cryptanalysis Appreciation 101' style course. Stays away from all but the most basic math.
