Appropriate 3-5, This book has great illustrations. They have many things to see; they are imaginative and fun. Jerry's father is a creative guy and he sets out to make one simple jungle gym for his family. As ideas come to him he keeps adding to the jungle gym until it is very elaborate and high. The book is told in rhyme so if you are not very good at poetry and marvel at people who are, read the book. It is a very enjoyable read!!

While this book seems to have a lot to recommend it, I just don't really like it for some reason. The soaring illustrations of fantastical gyms should excite, or at least illicit fear. Instead they seem too contained within the frames on the page and the dull colours bore. I also find it sad that there are no overall views of the entire jungle gym, as that would be a lot more spectacular than vignettes of areas that don't quite seem to go together. I do like and appreciate the careful attention ...more

Recommends it for: parents reading with their children
This is a strange, but fun story about an exuberant father who makes a jungle gym for his children, but then allows his enthusiasm and imagination to runaway and creates a monstrosity of a structure out of his yard and home. The rhyming narrative is fun to read aloud and the muted colors in the illustrations gives the book an old fashioned feel. The page that depicts the interior of his house pays homage to M.C. Escher and I enjoyed sharing some of Mr. Escher's famous illustrations with our girl ...more

This was an awesome book about a boy named Jerry whose father gets a bit carried away making a jungle gym in their back yard. As the jungle gym grows and expands to every increasing craziness and heights, Jerry is very jittery about playing on it. But during a jungle gym disaster - a huge fire - Jerry learns that being afraid doesn't mean you're not brave, but doing what's important, even when you are afraid, is what matters.

Excellent, fantastic, beautiful, crazy illustrations!

Chuck Richards teaches at my university and he gave a presentation in my reading/tutoring course. He spends a great deal of time working on the planning, illustrating, and writing process. I enjoyed the book but some of text did not flow well due to the forced rhyming.
