About the author

Gotlib (pseudonym of Marcel Gotlieb) was a French comics artist/writer and publisher. Through his own work and the magazines he co-founded, L' Écho des Savanes and Fluide Glacial, Gotlib was one of the key figures in the switch in French-language comics from their children's entertainment roots to an adult tone and readership. His trademark style fuses English-style nonsense, Jewish-American humour and French ribaldry, with a penchant for exaggeration of movements and sound effects.

I have a 1992 hardback reprint in French from Dargaud. The Rubrique à Brac strips that were published in the late 1960s and early 1970s were the high water mark of the anarchic creativity of the magazine Pilote that led a revolution in French comics, suddenly freed from censorship. Although I could very rarely get my hands on them as a child - my parents did not approve - these strips were hugely influential on my drawing style and subsequent story telling. I just had to get at least one book in my tweens when studying in Paris. And they are just as wildly funny and irreverent now as they were then. Absolute genius.
