When one pup’s up, the other nine are sure to follow! Young readers will love counting along as ten pups gradually wake up to nuzzle, wiggle, dine, and play. Count back down as the puppies fall asleep again, all in a fuzzy doggy jumble. This fun and simple counting book combines Marsha Wilson Chall’s energetic text with beloved illustrator Henry Cole’s adorable art to make a perfect read-aloud treat.
The dogs are cute. And it is a good counting book. But it might be too long for the toddlers to go all the way up and then all the way down. Maybe. I'll consider. Might not be too young for preschool, especially if you have them holding up fingers with the counting. At first I thought it might be fun to have them imitate some of the actions. Then I got to 6, laughed, and said "Never mind."
I LOVE this new counting book!. It's illustrated with adorable colored drawings by Henry Cole, and the expressions on the dogs faces are so cute you just want to say AAAWW. The rhyming text is very simple; here's an example: "1 pup's up/2 puppies tumble./3 puppies roll in a fuzzy puppy jumble." This book is suitable for toddlers and preschoolers, as well as puppy lovers! The puppies do all the normal puppy activities, chasing, pouncing, bouncing balls, even piddling at the park, and then the counting goes backwards from 10 until the very active puppies are sleepy again.
The story is about puppies waking up and going throughout their day until night time when they fall asleep. It describes what puppies do in their every day life, playing, jumping and having a great time. The strengths of this book are that they use dogs to count all the way up to ten and they use dogs because they are sweet, little animals that most children love. I love how it shows what the puppies do throughout the day while counting all the puppies in each setting. This book is good for teachers and for kids because it shows kids how to count and shows the numbers of puppies in the story as well as counting on the page. It grabs their attention with the dogs doing all kinds of different things throughout the day. It also might grab the children's attention with the dogs because maybe they think of their own dog too.
Fantastic illustrations show the little puppies going about their day as we count from 1 to 10 and then 10 to 1. Appropriate, although perhaps a bit long, for toddlers and perfect for preschoolers. Consider having them hold up the right amount of fingers or maybe do some of the actions of the puppies as you read. (Although number 6 is not ideal. 😁)
I enjoyed this book as much as my son did. It applies something a child needs to learn (counting) and something most children love (dogs) together for a cute story. When one pup is up, the rest will follow and they have lots of fun together. Cute rhyming and pictures make this story truly enjoyable.
The repetition of words in this book are helpful as I work on the building blocks of reading with my child. I like the rhyming scansion and he likes the cute puppy pictures.
Count along to ten with adorable puppies in this picture book. It all starts when one puppy wakes up, then more puppies join in on the fun. They tumble, roll, drink, piddle, chase, and much more. Another puppy joins in the fray with each new activity until dinner time. Then they slowly head to sleep, one at a time, counting down until they are all asleep. Of course, then it starts again the second one pup is up.
A very simple premise and simply told story, this book is filled with toddler appeal. The ease of the story along with its galloping rhyme and rhythm make it irresistible. Chall’s grace with so few words is evident on each page, allowing the images to tell the story. Cole’s puppies are playful balls of fun, that young readers will be drawn to and relate to. The illustrations are wonderfully large and bright with plenty of white space, making them ideal for use with a group.
Get those toddlers counting with these puppies and be ready for giggles when the piddle line appears. A delightful, light-hearted counting book appropriate for ages 2-4.
One Pup’s Up is a counting book that follows ten boisterous puppies through their day from start to finish, one to ten and back again. Each activity to be counted is marked by the number of puppies involved, such as 4 pups drink, 5 puppies huddle, and so on. The verses rhyme and flow well for a pleasant read-aloud experience that will hold the attention of older babies and toddlers alike. Each number is very recognizable in large bold typeface, followed by slightly smaller bold text describing the pup’s activities. The puppies activities are realistic and recognizable to anyone who has ever been around puppies, and little ones will certainly find their playful nature entertaining and silly. The watercolor illustrations are soft and colorful, portraying the puppies and their surroundings well. One Pup’s Up is a cute and fun counting book that will be enjoyable to those into counting as well as those not there yet.
This book is about ten puppies and what they do. It tells about their day from start to finish. It begins with one puppy being up until finally all ten puppies are up and partaking in the day's activities. Then, it ends the day by counting back from ten puppies to just one pup being up. The nice thing is that each time a number is said, that many puppies is on the page. This makes it easy to let the students count then so they can see that the number matches up with the amount of puppies on that page. This book will be useful in teaching numbers in mathematics. This book is a good way to help young children learn numbers 1-10.
"One pup's up. Two puppies tumble. Three puppies roll in a fuzzy puppy jumble." This book's infectious rhythm will get you bouncing along with these feisty little doggies. Each number is presented as a large, bold number (not words), and the book differs from other counting books by counting both up to 10 and then back down to 1. Lots of fun!
Engaging puppies! Love their fat little bellies. Great for one-on-one lap time, so grown-ups can talk about all the great language (huddle, pounce, pudgy, tussle, peppy, dines, nudge, muzzle). Might work in a preschool storytime; I think the pictures are a little busy for toddlers.
My new favorite counting book, especially since my son learned his killer math skills counting dogs at Green Lake. Bouncy rhyme (... 7 pups pounce/ 8 puppies chase / 9 puppies bounce in a pudgy puppy race...) and adorable pups (illustrator did And Tango Makes Three).
This book has puppies and counting, both of which are good things, but the rhyme is pretty forced at times, and doesn't flow the way I might wish. It still is cute and would be fun for storytime with little ones.
Chall, M. 'One pup's up". (2010). New York: Simon & Schuster.
This is a counting book with catchy, rhyming text. One unique thing that I like about this book is that it not only teaches counting up to ten, but also backwards from ten to one.
What drew me to this book was that is wasn't your typical 1 dog, 2 dog.... book. It shows what the pup's do during the day and shows them interacting and playing with each other. Loved the drawings too!
