About the author

Ronald D Thompson is a Company Director of 20 years. In 2016 he decided to fulfil an ambition to pen a novel, culminating in the launch of his debut novel, Earth in Torment, in March 2018. With an avid interest in the possibility of extra-terrestrial life in our Universe, science fiction was the obvious genre.

As a 58 years old family man, he enjoys the full support of his wife, children and grandchildren, in his quest to write a series of science fiction novels. Back in the day, a long time ago, his ambition was to be a session musician, gaining a place to study at the Leeds College of Music in his home town, along the way. Whilst he wasn't destined to be professional musician, writing in more recent years has been the forefront of a new challenge, one he intends to enjoy and make the most of as he nears retirement.

The quote that aptly sums up the thinking behind this series of novels is one of Arthur C Clarke's best "Two possibilities exist: either we are alone in the Universe or we are not. Both are equally terrifying."

I didn't really enjoy this book. it was pretty disjointed and had stunted story arcs all over the place. The middle bit was quite an adventure but had a 50's feel to the love interests and the technology descriptions seemed to be from someone that doesn't really use high tech stuff. It had an older generation style of speaking to it which didn't fit with the modern setting.

There were a few times where the story seemed to miss out a bit and then suddenly talk about it as a recap. Also, stars separating paragraphs where a new chapter should have been started instead.

Some sections seemed to be a short after thought, as though the author suddenly remembered a part of the story and tried to jam it in.

There were only a few typos, which I reported as content errors, so not a bad effort for a new indie authors first book but there were many times where "as" was used where "because" would have been more appropriate. I can't stand that!

One thing that I see in many first sci-fi books, this one included, is the need for the author to try and make alien names completely unique by using X and Z an Q with ridiculous home planet names. It makes them hard to read and even harder to remember.

Overall not a bad effort, I've read worse. Definitely in need of a good editor to sort out the story arcs and a bit more attention to technology descriptions and it might get a C

Earth in Torment

This is a book about Earth and Aliens trying to take it over. It tells how different groups join together to take out one race who think they have a right to Earth as they were originally from them way back. There is also a love attraction between two couples. Can’t wait to read book 2

Clever twist on a couple of sci-fi plots combined to make a fantastic read, highly recommended and looking forward to the conclusion..
