BACK FROM THE DEAD Yato is still trapped in the underworld and Izanami is doing everything in her power to prevent his escape. The only one capable of helping him now is his old nemesis Bishamon. Will she find it in her heart to rescue her hated foe? Or is there another way?
I swear this series either makes me grin like an idiot or it rips my heart out of my chest. This is officially my all time favorite manga! The character growth through the volumes is just amazing! I could rave about this series all day but it would get into spoiler territory. Please read this series if you love manga!
The funny thing about 3 volumes smushed together? WILD tonal shifts! First, we're still dealing with tail-end of Yato's escape from the underworld. Then, we're dealing with wee kiddo Ebisu who's been reborn, but is still pretty much a blank slate. After that, there's the lil trip to NOT!Disneyland (with surprising lore on Capybara Mickey Mouse...) made even funnier with Yato believing 100% that the man in the suit is Mickey himself (and the gruff fake-mature Yuki gradually falling to the magic of the Happiest Place on Earth). So then we're treated to some flashbacks to the goddess of misfortune, her minion, and their failed attempt to make a family (surprisingly heartbreaking). AND THEN THE SHOCKIN REVEAL OF YATO'S DADDY-O, and how he intends to pull his strings while being in the body of a classmate of Hiyori. And capped off with flashbacks to Yato's past as he was an impressionable child...who delighted in killing & maiming...until he came across a lady who became his moral compass...until tragedy strikes! Whew! Roller coaster of a book!
going from the most tragic arc yet to a volume-long high school slice of life cooldown and then to a volume-long tragic backstory flashback about murderous children is some incredible whiplash. but children who are raised to kill is some of my favorite stuff in a story. the immortal villain who chooses to take the form of a teenage boy to get close to the main girl is very... young adult fiction (derogatory).
This volume absolutely broke me, then it put me back together, and then it broke me again. Noragami is how you do wholesome. It’s how you do tragic backstory. It’s how you do heart wrenching character arcs. I could gush about it for probably longer than I should, but I am so so glad I picked this series up again.
This one just felt like a step up from all the others. Exposing a bit of Yato's past, hinting at big secrets that are obviously important to the upcoming climax of the story and amazing fight scenes as well, it's all done so smoothly. It doesn't get confusing with all the perspectives being explored either, it just adds to the overall story.
4.5 - I didn’t find that much to be going on in a good portion of this but the parts I did, were so good. I love seeing the god regeneration process and WOW Yato’s backstory. I’m now past where the anime ends so it’s all new territory. I’m buckled in and ready.
So much shinki development in this one and SAKURA and yatos backstory oh I’ll throw up EVERYWHERE plus capyper land is in this too like you’ve really got it all
