“Doctor Foster went to Glo’ster, In a shower of rain; He stepped in a puddle right up to his middle, And never went there again.” A bumper crop of nursery rhymes for the delight of the very young. In his Introduction, Jerrold explains how his selection was based on earlier collections made by John Newbery, Joseph Ritson and James Orchard Halliwell. He goes on to add, “ Students divide our rhymes into narrative pieces, historical folk-lore, game rhymes, counting-out rhymes, jingles, fragments, etcetera, but for the children for whom and by whom they are remembered, and for whom they are here collected and pictured anew, they are just — Nursery Rhymes.”

I grew up with the typical Mother Goose rhymes and still enjoyed those that were familiar, but holy cow.. this was made for kids?! Everything dies, gets murdered, or doesn't make any sense. Kind of dark and twisted! The illustrations were fun, but it was also weird at the same time. Idk what to think.
Great collection of the Mother Goose Nursery Rhymes. This edition has more than any other edition I've read and includes classic nursery rhymes and lesser-known ones all in one volume.
For the last two weeks of school I read these to Joshua's class. I read them from my original book I got when I was four (which is falling apart:). It was fun as I would start one and the class would repeat them along with me. It brought back a lot of memories for me from growing up. I have also been reading them to Summer here at home. Classic.
When my maternal grandmother use to come and visit she would tell me a poem to help me fall asleep. I have been searching for that poem for years. I found it in this book it's called, "The Obstinate Pig." Cute collection of old time nursery rhymes.
Love this book for reading to infants/toddlers! It is not my favorite Nursery Rhyme book, however it is full of a large variety of rhymes that you do not hear all the time.
