Dark Protectors #16.5

A Vampire’s Mate: A Dark Protectors/Rebels Novella

Rate this book
There’s nothing Jasper Maxwell likes better than a good chase. He is patient and cunning, and he is known as one of the coldest hunters in the immortal realm. As a vampire with a hint of demon blood in him, he stands out even amongst the finest trackers in the shifter world. So the fact that his mate has managed to escape him for the past five decades is something that keeps him intrigued and more obsessed with every passing year. The game is beyond delicious until a century old enemy resurfaces, putting his sweet little mate in danger. At that point, he has no choice but to secure her.

Leah Ferry enjoys immortality almost as much as she thrills at the cat and mouse game she’s playing with the Maxwell hunter. Once human, she figured she’d live her life wearing pearls and vacuuming in pressed dresses only to be thrown into the immortal world where freedom is intoxicating. On a mission to take down degenerate humans and make them pay, things go wrong, so per her usual arrangement, she starts to run. But this time, her sexy and deadly vampire mate stands in her way. She quickly learns that the sensual chase between them was nothing compared to the real danger coming for her.

Every 1001 Dark Nights novella is a standalone story. For new readers, it’s an introduction to an author’s world. And for fans, it’s a bonus book in the author’s series. We hope you'll enjoy each one as much as we do.

A Vampire’s Mate by Rebecca Zanetti
Dark Protectors series #16.5. Paranormal romantic suspense. The 1001 Dark Nights books can be read as a stand-alone but it’s better if familiar with the world already in place.
Leah Ferry was turned immortal by Jason Maxwell after getting seriously injured on a mission to blow a bridge during WWII. Since then she has worked on dangerous missions undercover for the military and privately to stop degenerate humans. She is working on catching the last on her list of child traffickers when Jasper has had enough of her just sending him some of her blood. He’s ready to stop his sweet mate for endangering herself so they can create a life together for themselves. Leah just needs the address for where the children are being held and then she’s planning a nice long vacation. She’d rather Jasper go away again, but she can use his help since the Kurjans now seem to be on her tail.

A wild ride of danger, risk, passion, friends and things blowing up. Jasper and Leah are a whirlwind fighting for their beliefs. It was fun to have Ivy included and Jasper’s brothers with just a couple of mentions of Benny. Those Kurjans and their plans just aren’t going away! Steamy hot scenes too. Jasper sure likes flipping Leah over his shoulder! Leah doesn’t hate it.

This is the fifth novella in the Dark Protectors spin-off series Rebels, and it’s the second book featuring the Maxwell brothers. It’s a short, sexy and action-packed romance with a possessive alpha vampire determined to claim his mate, and I loved it.

Jasper and Leah met towards the end of WWII. He was a vampire searching for his one true mate, and he found Leah just in time to save her life by mating her and giving her immortality. She was a spy who was hell-bent on completing her mission, so they agreed to temporarily go their separate ways while they both continued on with their lives. Now it’s decades later, Leah is in danger once again, and Jasper has decided that it’s time to claim his mate once and for all.

“I told you I’d come for you one day,” he said smoothy. “Time’s up.”

I love this series so much and was so happy to be back in this world. It’s well-developed and always intriguing, and Zanetti writes it so well. There’s lots of action as Jasper and Leah team up to bring down a people smuggling ring, and it’s exciting and fast-paced with lots of supernatural badassery. And the love story is gorgeous – they know they belong together, they don’t deny their attraction, Leah is just hesitant to give up her life’s work to settle down. Jasper is a fabulous mix of fierce alpha and respectful, considerate partner, and I loved watching these two go back and forth as they figure it all out.

“This is your new reality, baby. You and me. All-in.”
Panic fought with the desire flowing through her veins. “I’m not ready.”
“Too bad. I am.”

The romance is fun, sexy, heartfelt and functional, and with these two battling each other and the bad guy, it’s an eventful read. There’s a lot going on in a really short novella, and I loved every moment.

There is enough background given for you to read this one as a standalone, but there is some character crossover and some lore that is definitely more enjoyable to read about if you’ve read the other books in the series. And if you haven’t – dive on in, because this is one of my fave PNR series.

I loved this one, and am looking forward to more books for the Maxwell brothers.

4.5 stars.

4.5 stars ⭐️

I really love this series and I was thrilled to see that there was a new novella out this morning.

We have met Leah Ferry in a previous book when she was partnering with Ivy and making a game out of running from Jasper Maxwell. Leah is Jasper's mate, but they have had a unique arrangement for the last 80 years. Leah is a strong and dominant woman who was a British spy during WW2 and is used to running headlong into dangerous situations. She has had a sort of cat and mouse game going on with Jasper all these years. Jasper has been fine with it in the past, but he now decides it is time to bring Leah home. Too bad she isn't on the same page.

This story has us following along as Leah is in the last stages of trying to shut down a child trafficking ring. Unfortunately, she doesn't realize that she has walked right into a trap until it's too late.

Jasper and his brothers are working on a different mission, but crazy things happen and it becomes apparent that the two missions might be related.

This was a very quick and easy story and I enjoyed it quite a bit. The storyline wrapped up fairly quickly and we did get a little bit of advancement from the overall storyline as well.

Loved it :)

4.25stars- A VAMPIRE’S MATE is instalment 16.5 in Rebecca Zanetti’s contemporary, adult DARK PROTECTORS / REBELS crossover, and a part of the multi-authored 1001 Dark Nights series. This is four-hundred year old vampire Jasper Maxwell, and spy Leah Ferry’s story line. A VAMPIRE’S MATE can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous story lines is revealed where necessary but some prior knowledge or background information may be required.

Some background: The vampires and their enemy the Kurjans are currently existing in a tepid détente but all is not well as it concerns the Maxwell family. The brokered peace is not acceptable by the family that continues to blame the Maxwell’s for thousands of years of war.

Told from dual omniscient third person perspectives (Leah and Jasper) A VAMPIRE’S MATE focuses on the tempestuous relationship between our story line couple. In 1944, Leah Ferry worked as a spy but a mission that went all to h*ll left Leah battling to survive if not for the intervention of vampire Jasper Maxwell.Jasper Maxwell knew Leah was his mate, and he desperately wanted to save the woman who would become the bane of his existence. Fast forward to present day, Jasper returns to claim the woman with whom he had fallen in love but Leah’s latest assignment place the couple in jeopardy as the hunt for the leader of a child trafficking ring takes aim at both Jasper and Leah.

The world building focuses on Leah’s determination to hunt and take down the men who procure and use humans as their playthings and slaves. Jasper Maxwell has reached the end of his tether, and his need to re-claim his mate is paramount to their survival.

The relationship between Jasper and Leah begins as a rescue but Leah wants nothing to do with being tied down to a man for all eternity. As an enhanced female, Leah is the perfect match for our story line hero but Leah’s need to be independent threatens the relationship going forward. The $ex scenes are limited but passionate.

The secondary and supporting characters include Jasper’s brothers Klyde and Dax, their mother Odette, and sister Nia. The requisite evil has many faces.

A VAMPIRE’S MATE is a fast paced story of power and control, secrets and obsession, family and friendships, relationships and love. The action packed premise is enchanting and consuming; the romance is limited ; the characters are determined, powerful and dynamic.

I would like to thanks 1001 Dark Nights, Blue Box Press, and Rebecca Zanetti for providing this ARC in exchange for my honest review. All opinions expressed are my own.

A Vampire’s Mate is the next book in the Dark Protectors/Rebels series (Book 16.5) by Rebecca Zanetti. This book is about Leah Ferry and Jasper Maxwell who met when Leah almost died in an explosion during WWII. Leah was working as a spy, and agreed to be Jasper’s mate in order to survive and continue to help with the war against Germany. She did her best to evade him, but sent him regular shipments of her blood to ward off the Maxwell curse. Jasper had grown tired of living apart and tracked Leah down, but she wasn’t ready. It was up to Jasper to convince Leah that living a life together was better than having a cause apart. This author is an adept a writing a novella. They always are well written and paced, never rushed, and their conclusions are satisfying. Leah and Jasper’s story was fun, and I enjoyed the challenge that Leah presented for him. Their chemistry was pretty combustible and the novella deliciously spicy. I was routing for Jasper since I knew how much Leah would benefit from being a part of his extended family unit, especially as she was already close to his sister-in-law and his grandmother. In general, this novella left me feeling warm and happy and was fun to read. I recommend this to readers who enjoy contemporary paranormal romance. While part of a much larger series, 1001 Dark Nights novellas are written to work also as a stand-alone book, possible as a snack to get readers excited to read more. I have read some, but not all, of the Dark Protectors series and have found them all enjoyable, and I have always enjoyed this author’s work. If this is your genre, give it a try! If you want to catch up with the series, the first book is available in Kindle Unlimited and many are available through your local library.

Series: Dark Protectors #16.5
Rating: 3 stars - I liked it

Jasper Maxwell met his mate during WWII while they both were on important assignments. They mated to save her life and promised that they eventually would reunite. Five decades later and Leah is still managing to escape him. But when she starts being hunted by Kurjan, Jasper finally has a chance to win his mate over.

This was a short and fast paced novella. Leah is a spy and has spent years doing dangerous work. Her current job is taking down child traffickers and that has led to her hunting Kurjan’s who are helping with the trafficking. Leah was great. She was smart, capable, and refused to give into Jasper’s demanding ways. I liked that she never backed down and did what she had planned to do, even if it was dangerous for her.

Jasper was a character I didn’t really love. He was demanding and controlling. He expected Leah to just follow along with any of his orders and never actually talked to her. It felt like he just wanted to have a woman at his side, not an actual partner and wife.

In this we see that even though a treaty has been signed between the kurjans, demons, and vampire realms, there is still danger and spin-off groups causing chaos. Overall, while I didn’t love this couple, I still liked Leah and want to see more of her in the future.

A fantastic novella set in Rebecca Zanetti’s Dark Protectors world as Jasper Maxwell, after initially finding his mate Leah, eighty years before, has decided its now time he claimed her, he just has to find her first, something that’s easier said than done when the lady in question doesn’t want to be caught. But just as he’s tracking her down someone else is hunting her for her enhanced abilities.

With a hot, overly possessive alpha vampire, a ballsy, independent heroine and a gripping storyline of paranormal beings, fated mates and traffickers what’s not to love about A Vampire’s Mate. I adored the character of Leah. She’d dedicated her life to tracking down the scum of their earth. The only fun in her life, her game of cat and mouse with Jasper but this time he wouldn’t take no for an answer. His problem was that he underestimated Leah, throwing her over his shoulder and expecting her to sit at home like the good little woman while he went out and saved the world, not realising she was more than capable of standing at his side as his equal. Their banter was deliciously wicked as they argued and fought their way across Paris with Kurjans hot on their heels. My one complaint about this book would be it was over too soon but once again 1001 Dark Nights has done its job. I now want to go and read more from the dark protectors.

I am such a fan of Rebecca’s Dark Protectors world and every time a new story comes out, I gobble up every word!

Leah is a strong, fierce mate whose stubbornness gets the better of her. Jasper is a tall, hunky vampire with an equally fierce protectiveness and antiquated ways of thinking on what a mate should do. Jasper has a dangerous job but he wants Leah safe at home while he goes out and has all the fun. I mean, he means well, but he obviously doesn’t know who he mated if he thinks Leah will be the good little mate waiting at the door for her male to come home.

Leah has a purpose greater than herself, she’s not ready to settle down with Jasper, even though she's had eight decades of freedom.

Leah and Jasper’s interests cross paths in Paris and they team up to take care of some super bad baddies. While Leah has taken advantage of the extended life afforded vampire mates, she’s not as physically strong as she should be because she hasn’t been in close proximity to her mate, Jasper. It’s a learning lesson for all as the pair stumble their way through cobblestone streets… and their relationship.

Each and every Rebecca story is an exciting adventure. A Vampire’s Mate is a fun, fast read that will leave readers wanting more!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

1001 Dark Nights: A Vampire’s Kiss is a fast-paced, addictive novella that delivers exactly what fans of the Dark Protectors/Rebels world are looking for—danger, passion, and just enough emotional depth to make it memorable. Despite its shorter length, the story packs a strong punch and never feels rushed.

Rebecca Zanetti does an excellent job of balancing action and romance, dropping readers straight into a high-stakes situation where attraction and trust collide. The chemistry is intense, and the protective instincts, sharp dialogue, and underlying vulnerability between the characters make their connection feel believable. The vampire elements are dark and alluring, adding to the overall tension without overwhelming the story.

What really stands out is how seamlessly this novella fits into the larger universe while still working well as a standalone. It expands the world just enough to feel rich and connected, yet remains focused on delivering a satisfying, self-contained story. While I would have loved a bit more time with the characters, the ending feels complete and rewarding.

Overall, A Vampire’s Kiss is a fun, steamy, and engaging read that proves a shorter story can still deliver big on emotion and excitement. A great addition for fans of paranormal romance and the Dark Protectors/Rebels series.

OUI !!

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

A novella that I have been waiting for so long !

With all the glimpses we had of Leah (a spy who has been driving Jasper crazy for decades !), I was really impatient to read their story ! So yes it was too short because I like my Rebecca Zanetti books longer but I loved seeing them reunite =)

In short, a paranormal romance novella that I devoured too quickly !

Will I reread all the Maxwell brothers' stories next ?? YES !

And am I looking forward to the next book with the next Maxwell brother ?? YES !!

As is usually the case with this author’s short stories, this was a quick and exciting read. There is action, emotions, chemistry, and love. Plus, it’s a great introduction to the faithful Dark Protectors readers as to how the world is working now that there is a sort of understanding between the Kurjans and the rest of the paranormal world. Or is there?

Jasper is ready to take Leah as his wife in more than just name and the occasional feeding. Leah is a badass. She was severely injured while working with the resistance during WWII, that is how she became Jasper’s mate. He wasn’t ready to settle down and understood Leah was too fiercely independent to want to either. But Jasper’s time is running out if the family curse is to be believed, but can Leah be tamed?

I love that Jasper understood when Leah needed to spread her wings and when she needed someone else to make the decisions. While she’s not used to someone else being in charge, it’s tiring to always be the leader. Leah eventually realized she could fully trust Jasper and was able to give herself over to him when needed.

I’m so happy that another new book will be coming in this series next year. This story proved there are still many entities out there that don’t want peace.

Rebecca Zanetti has been giving hints of Jasper and Leah in the last couple of Maxwell brother novellas. Finally, it’s time to see their story come alive. Leah always knew Jasper would come for her but she hasn’t been ready to go. She’s dead set on getting through her list of bad guys heading a trafficking ring and is down to the last two. But she might be in over her head on this one. Enter Jasper who has finally decided that it’s time. Leah is strong, brilliant, strategic, and cunning, but she needs Jasper’s help for this one. She just has to convince him to let her stay involved because his alpha instinct is to protect his mate at all costs. As always with the Maxwell clan, they love hard and they love forever. Once Jasper turns his full attention on Leah, she doesn’t stand a chance at resisting. It’s a good thing she doesn’t really want to resist anyway. This Maxwell novella, set in the Dark Hunters world, is a quick and easy read that will have readers wanting more. And we get just enough of a peak at Dax’s story that fans of the series will be waiting with bated breath for what comes next!

A Vampire’s Mate is another wonderful novella in Queen of PNR Rebecca Zanetti’s Dark Protectors universe. I love this series so much and A Vampire’s Mate has everything I need - sexy vampire Jasper, strong heroine Leah and non-stop action.

Jasper Maxwell met his mate, Leah Ferry, in World War 2, he saved her life, they mated but were going in different directions. Now years later, he’s tired of their cat and mouse game and coming for her. Turns out they have a common enemy, by working together they can bring down a super baddie, continue their mating and find their HEA.

A Vampire’s Mate is a spicy, short, action packed novella that I devoured. For fans of the Dark Protectors we get cameos from the other Maxwell brothers, Ivy and some Benny mentions! Leah and Jasper have incredible chemistry! I love how fierce she is and he doesn’t try to change her but support her. The steam is spot on, the explosions are fierce and the Kurjans are around every corner! The set up for Dax is perfect and I will be counting down until that story comes out.

Jasper and Leah mated in the waning days of the Second World War. She was a fatally wounded Allied spy who needed a second chance to live and he was a Maxwell demon-vampire who needed his mate to stave off the family curse. Over the years she has donated blood to him when he needed it, but they kept feelings out of their “mating for convenience.”

Leah has used her independence to further her undercover pursuits, but Jasper’s patience has run out. He needs his mate safely sequestered at the Maxwell ranch while he hunts his mortal enemies. Can Leah drag Jasper’s outdated but sexy butt into the 21st century? Will Jasper’s nemesis hit our hero where he is most vulnerable? How has Leah and Jasper abstained from vampire monkey sex for eight decades?

The Dark Protectors remains my favourite of Rebecca’s fictional worlds. This latest novella captures the fun and romance that I have come to crave from her while still keeping things fresh. It makes me want more of her sexy demon-vampires, which is good because the Maxwells are a large family!

Leah has undertaken perilous undercover missions for both the military and private organizations to combat corrupt individuals. Currently, she is focused on apprehending the last child trafficker on her list.

The inclusion of Ivy and Jasper's brothers adds depth to the narrative, with brief mentions of Benny. The relentless threat posed by the Kurjans adds tension to the plot.

The steamy romantic scenes between Jasper and Leah add an extra layer of intensity to their relationship. Jasper's protective nature is evident in his actions. Jasper, her protective mate, grows increasingly concerned about her safety and urges her to prioritize their future together.

The story unfolds with a thrilling blend of danger, passion, camaraderie, and explosive action. Jasper and Leah's dynamic partnership is a force to be reckoned with as they fight for justice.

Jasper and Leah are finally getting together after decades apart. Well, Jasper plans on Leah joining him, Leah however has other plans....which leads to explosions, exciting chases, danger, and lots of steam.

A Vampire's Mate is an exciting and fast-paced novella in Rebecca Zanetti's Dark Protectors/Rebels series and part of 1,001 Dark Nights Tales. While the book might be novella in length, it certainly isn't short on content.
Highly recommend!

Many thanks to the author and 1,001 Dark Nights for an advance copy of this book. My thoughts and opinions are my own and without bias or favor or expectation.

Another great action filled novella in the Dark Protectors universe involving the Maxwells of Montana and the fated Maxwell Curse. Jasper finds his mate in Leah, but she has missions to accomplish before she’ll be ready to settle down. Jasper saves her life with their mating and they go their separate ways until Jasper decides it’s time he and Leah are together all the time. Filled with a lot of heat and action, Jasper and Leah must learn to trust one another and work together so that they can begin their forever. A Vampire’s Mate is a delicious little bite to hold you over until the next full length novel in the Dark Protectors series.

This spicy paranormal romance novella is the perfect way to kick off the spooky season! Leah, our sassy heroine, has enjoyed her freedom, but Jasper, our dark protector, is finished with their long-running cat-and-mouse game—especially now that rival bloodlines are targeting Leah. Jasper will do whatever it takes to keep her safe, even if it means throwing her over his shoulder and carrying her out while she kicks and punches in protest. 😮‍💨 This novella is fast paced and packed with action. If you're looking for a captivating vampire dark romance, sink your teeth into this one!

“His scent wrapped around her, and her body turned to lava as if she'd been waiting for him with every heartbeat. "Jasper," she whispered.”

I was hooked on this book from page one. The plot line was intriguing and quick paced with multiple spicy breaks that were just 🥵. The banger between Jasper and Leah was fun and deliciously dark during the entire book, it was so easy to fall in love with them. If you’re looking for a quick spicy read that has a plot line that will keep you wondering, this is the book for you. My only complaint is that the story was over too soon!

This is Leah & Jasper's story and it's wild and wicked ride. She's a strong & independent woman who is his fated mate and he's very determined to finally catch and contain her. Story takes place mostly in Paris and has a lot of twists and turns, some very bad bad guys (rogue Kurjans) and human traffickers for them both to deal with. I love that Leah is such a strong character otherwise Jasper would completely overwhelm her. There are car chases, motorcycles chases and some explosions along the way. Another solid entry into the Maxwell family saga.

A Vampires’s Mate is a witty, steamy, action-packed, PNR, standalone tale!

I absolutely adore Rebecca Zanetti’s Dark Protector World. And I am so happy to be back in it with A Vampire’s Mate. Leah and Jasper’s standalone HEA tale has it all. Steamy adventure, smart witty dialog, fun family and friend chaos, and a satisfying conclusion to Leah and Jasper’s PNR tale and thread.
And I’m looking forward to more stories with the two remaining Maxwell brothers..
I loved this story from the first page to the very last.

The Maxwell Curse continues

These are fun short stories ala Arabian nights. Zanetti packs a punch again with child trafficking in Paris, with the Maxwell mates teaming up against the bad guys. Kurjans are not at war with the realm, except there are always rogues. Benny lost another apartment - blown up but loved the details of legos all around for his children (4,5?!!). And the ending has the next Maxwell off to rescue another damsel in distress - although they seem to put up a great fight themselves.

A Fast, Fun read

A VAMPIRE'S MATE is another fun story in The Dark Protectors series. Zanetti crafted a story of menace mixed well with humor, longing and lust, all that good romantic stuff I love and expect from her. Jasper and Leah made a likeable couple, one I look forward to meeting again in the series.

Though brief, which novellas are, the story carried mystery, action and the resolve of two strong and independent leads in good detail. And though the Kurjan antagonist was chilling, it seemed anticlimactic to name a badass, Wallace! Very pleased with this entry.

Another Awesome Story from the Dark Protector Series

I can't get enough of this series and its characters. Jasper and Leah mated decades ago but she's had missions to complete and has avoided being with him full time. She has two more traffickers to put away before she can take a break. In the meantime Jasper has found her again and is determined to put an end to them being apart. Their chemistry is off the charts and they end up working together to end the bad guys. Definitely an excellent read.

bit tired of the tropes

Firstly I love Rebecca Zanetti and Usually I really do love these stories and am on board but am starting to feel a little jaded with the repeated obedience and spanking tropes of these guys. In all the hundreds of years they haven’t evolved? Really? It’s hard to take them seriously as intelligent guys when they treat women with this blatant disregard for their individual choices for their lives and bodies. Maybe it’s time for a different series for a while, another one from this author that is ;D

Jasper and Leah

These two met during a war, mated and then fulfilled the mandates of the Maxwell family curse but in an unusual way. Circumstances forced them to reunite, helping Leah realize what she truly had with Jasper. A visit from Benny always adds to the humor, so that was icing on the cake. I enjoyed this novella and look forward to the next brother's story. Highly recommended.
