Readers become writers, and Christina has always been a reader. Ultimately she discovered she liked to read romance best because the relationship between a man and a woman is always humorous. A woman wants world peace, a clean house, and a deep and meaningful relationship based on mutual understanding and love. A man wants a Craftsman router, undisputed control of the TV remote, and a red Corvette which will make his bald spot disappear.
When Christina’s first daughter was born, she told her husband she was going to write a book. It was a good time to start a new career, because how much trouble could one little infant be?
Ha! It took ten years, two children and three completed manuscripts before she was published. Now her suspense, paranormal, historical, and mystery novels have been translated into 30 languages and sold more than 15 million copies in print. Praised for her “brilliantly etched characters, polished writing, and unexpected flashes of sharp humor that are pure Dodd” (Booklist), her award-winning books have landed on numerous Best of the Year lists and, much to her mother's delight, Dodd was once a clue in the Los Angeles Times crossword puzzle. She lives with her family in the Pacific Northwest, where her 700 lavender plants share the yard with her husband’s various “Big Projects,” including a treehouse, zipline, and their very own Stonehenge.
Enter Christina’s worlds and join her mailing list for humor, book news and entertainment (yes, she’s the proud author with the infamous three-armed cover) at christinadodd.com. I'm going to give this one 4 stars despite the second story sucking...
Shotgun Bride - Catherine Anderson - ***** 5 stars
Wow, the story arc on this one was delicious!
At the start of the story, Charlie is the 26 year old daughter of the preacher in Juniper Hollow. Josh is a relatively new rancher to the area and a loner. Rumours abound about dangerousness and everyone knows he visits the local brothel over the bar every Saturday night while never approaching reputable women. Of course there's always another side to the stories.
Stranded for the night at his place, Charlie and Josh become friends. She is loved by her family and friends, but they all see her as overweight and plain.
It's one of those stories where the h can change her clothes and hairstyle and become alluring. But the author pulls it off well. There's a misunderstanding, also believable, that made my heart near break in two. But Josh is a thoughtful guy and manages to grovel in a way that has more meaning than just saying 'I'm sorry' (although he does that too).
For such a short story, the characters are nicely developed and grow over the few weeks they know each other.
I wasn't crazy about the set up of this one at first, but it spun out in a beautiful way.
Safety is good
Wild Texas Rose - Christina Dodd - * DNF but really one star
Well a big DNF for this one. I did skim it somewhat too see how it ended which only confirmed that I made the right choice DNFing it. Idiots. All of them. Didn't like either MC. He's one of those snarky arrogant Heroes who undresses her in public while dancing with her. Who does that?!?!?
She has a very large stick up her arse for the entire story including the supposedly romantic ending.
I've read and liked this author before and usually she is engaging so I'm not sure what happened with this one.
The backstory was kinda depressing and the MCs spend a good bit of time pointing fingers at each other in the end for what went wrong with their 'love'. The whole mystery has a ridiculous ending that I think was supposed to be funny but was kinda pathetic and disappointing.
Personally I would have shot him.
Safety is not particularly good
One Riot, One Ranger - Susan Sizemore - *** 3 stars
Quirky and odd. I was not expecting a time travel story in this anthology.
Marty is 6"2' and the Sheriff of their small town, and the heiress of the county and not particularly bright. Well at least, not book smart. She's an odd duck but I liked her.
Chris wakes from a bar fight in modern times, to find himself on a horse riding into a small town in the 1800's. Yet he strangely knows how to ride a horse as well as he rode his motorcycle and decides to name his horse, 'Harley'.
The story has an offbeat humour that was engaging and yet occasionally annoying too. But somehow it never crosses the line to become uncomfortable.
Sure Chris, who was a loner and a drifter in the future, finds himself resisting his present circumstances, and he certainly doesn't see himself as a Texas Ranger!
But... things just kinda happen to him, Forrest Gump style.

Read
June 24, 2011I feel it unfair to rate this book.
Catherine Anderson: Shotgun Bride: Really liked this book. I would give it 4 Stars
Christina Dodd: Wild Texas Rose: I thought this book was good, but off. I thought it was too sexy for a western, that it had more of a regency feel. I also felt that it was a full lenghth book, abridged. I understand its a shorter story, but it felt like pages were missing. Maybe 3 stars
Susan Sizemore: One Riot, One Ranger: This was a time travel. I am not fond of time travels. Besides that, I thought it a bit chessy and cliche. It had a showdown in the street, train robbery (almost), a gang of outlaws, whores, lynch mob, overbearing man trying to run everything, new sheriff (ranger) in town...the list goes on. I am a huge western fan, and felt like this story was almost making fun of other western romances. I would give it a 2 Star rating at the highest.
Coming all the ratings, it would average out to a 3 star. This I feel doesn't do the first book any justice.

With Catherine Anderson (a favorite author) leading the pack, I thought this would be a great anthology to try. There are three stories, all newly published in this offering. Until I started the third story, I was unaware it was a time-travel tale. WHO PUTS TIME TRAVEL STORIES IN WESTERN SHORT STORIES?
SHOTGUN BRIDE (Catherine Anderson) -- 5 stars
This is a very satisfying read from a great author. Charlotte Masterson, the preacher's only daughter, drives near Joshua Slade's ranch when her mare bolts and throws Charlotte out of the wagon and into the mounting snow of a growing blizzard. Joshua is a rancher with a bad gun reputation; he hasn't made friends and has is rather stand-offish. However, he finds Charlotte and pops her shoulder back in its socket. By the time she returns to town, her reputation is ruined. This is a great story that is satisfying on so many levels. The wisdom of Charlotte's father (versus Joshua's father) was great.
WILD TEXAS ROSE (Christina Dodd) -- 2 stars
Rose Corey raises horses for sale and lives alone. Thorn Maxwell went away to prison and, eight-years later arrives in time for the local dance. He makes a point of asking Rose to dance. Rose is losing horses and is so worried that she writes and asks for a Texas Ranger to be sent to her for help.
This story started off fine but quickly devolved into a repetitious (just how many times did the author need to tell us that Thorn went away to prison?), boring story. The author pulled up all the Texas cliches she could roundup and foisted them on the reader. Of course, the two main characters stopped looking for the horse thieves long enough to have sex (out on the trail, of course). This was awful; I skip-read to finish this miserable mess.
ONE RIOT, ONE RANGER (Susan Sizemore) -- 1 STAR
Why would any publisher put a time-travel story in with historical fiction? I ordered this book without seeing the cover; just looking at the wonderful rating (4.7 = overall score on Amazon). I tried to read it but found it to be absolute rubbish.
Miss Marty Rose is the newly appointed sheriff of Loon, TX. Because her uncle has recently been killed and there is lots of lawless activity, she sends for a Texas Ranger. Instead, she gets Chris Parris who usually rides a Harley (but who miraculously knows how to ride a horse although he's never been on one). Give me a break. I threw this book at the wall.
**
This purchase has taught me to be much more careful about reading all the info about a potential purchase before ordering.

I didn't like collab and story

Very good anthology with "Shotgun Bride" by Catherine Anderson being my favorite but they were closely followed by the other two stories, "Wild Texas Rose" by Christina Dodd and "One Riot, One Ranger", (a time travel romance) by Susan Sizemore.
