I've read every Lawrence Lynch book I can get my hands on and I think this might be the best. It features two rival police detectives and at least three – possibly four – plot threads, all of which are nicely juggled so the reader never loses track of who is who and what is happening.
Since it was published in the late 19th century, the story does feature an appalling amount of fainting, brain fevers, and other proofs of weakness by the female characters. But that is its only flaw. In every other respect it's an exciting and interesting read.
