This is a marvellous non-fiction book which can engage the young reader in many different ways. Firstly, it contains painted transparent pages that change the pictures and therefore it incorporates elements of surprise and undoubtedly will encourage children to explore the book in more detail. Moreover, it presents links to the music that we encounter in everyday life such as buzzing of bees or barking of dogs. Hence children can relate to the information found in the book.

This book can be used during guided reading session or in the music lesson. In addition, it may constitute an introduction to a design and technology activity on creating musical instruments as it presents some advice how to make such items. It is also a good resource to use during science sessions on sound. Undoubtedly this book should be in the classroom book corner so children can explore it during independent reading.

I love this series. Some of them are very hard to find and command a high price. The pictures are clear and bright and the "clear pages" add interest. They are European based, so some of the species pictures are not native but the information is sound. Recommended, if you can find them!

I really liked how instruments from different cultures were represented. Even though there was a banjo and banjos are, well, gross. The cross-section of the piano more than made up for that inclusion. Sorry, Max.

This is a wonderful book that includes transparent pages that shows the insides of the musical instruments so children can get a better view of them. The illustrations are amazing and include lots of detail. Children can also see how nature and their bodies can be musical instruments.

Excellent presentation of basic musical concepts for non-musicians, not just children!
