Canoe Trip: Alone in the Maine Wilderness

Rate this book
Each year Dave Curran travels alone by canoe into the Maine wilderness. He's paddled the Seboeis, the Allagash, and the Moose. Despite the risk of such an adventure, he prefers to go alone. It's easier to plan, and going alone he's more focused, less distracted. He goes for the challenge, battling weather, bears, black flies, mosquitoes, getting lost. He goes for the scenery, the wildness, the silence, the peace. An insightful and compelling read for all who dream of making this kind of backcountry trip.

I enjoyed the authors retelling of his canoe trips. As an avid adventurer this really hit the spot and has got me planning my next trip. It was a quick and easy read and I’m grateful to read about the authors experience in Maine.

Nice canoe tripping inspiration. I read this because I do a fair amount of canoe camping in Maine and New Hampshire and I wanted some early season inspiration. This book worked to supply that inspiration. Many of the places in the book I have been, so it was that much more interesting to me to see places I have been to through the author's eyes.
I was also interested in the river trips he has taken. While I haven't done too many rivers, this certainly made me want to do more. Curran has a good sense of humor about his abilities and the knots of pre trip preperation we all go through before a trip starts was funny and relatable.
Overall, I felt the author captured the madness; beauty; challenges and dangers of being out in the Maine woods. We on the east coast are lucky to have such an abundant resource so close to us.
Curran is a fun read whom I will pick up again.

Loved the book. Related to him and his desire to go solo. Enjoyed the simplicity of the account of his adventures. Glad to see he has another title, I will be getting that one as well.
