Wanting to make up for his part in the tragedy, Frank rides to central Texas to help Ranger Tyler Beaumont put down the so-called Fence-Cutting War. But as big ranchers battle small ones, an outlaw gang has hellish plans of its own. Now, as an innocent town is threatened with annihilation, Frank must make his final stand on a hot Sunday in Texas—when the dying will say their final prayers . . .

This is a very well crafted tale with writing, plot, dialogue and settings. All covered. The book is a continuation of the book before it, so reading this series in order, at this point, is important to understand the dynamics of the main characters.
The element of mystery is often missing or poorly handled in a Johnstone Clan novel. This one is well done. Not that there is one mystery, but a number of them. The writing in unraveling the complex plot is excellent. Sure, this is no du Maurier, but, for a western that must have certain sensibilities to be a western, this is one of the outstanding in the Johnstone Clan vast library.
Bottom line: I recommend this book. 10 out of ten points.
Too violent. I like the two main characters, Frank Morgan and Tyler Beaumont, but there is a great number of fatalities and I don’t think the West was that free wheeling especially around 1900. Plot is a simple one. A Texas Ranger goes undercover to stop a range war where neither side is evil but there are bad guys stirring the pot. William Johnstone normally writes better than this, but if you love violence, this one is for you.
This one had some undercover stuff going on, but some deep issues that needed to be worked through between the texas ranger and frank. I like to read these to get away from reality, so when those things are introduced, it feels too real. Oh well, great acting as usual. The story was otherwise standard fare.
Another great story of the west by Mr. Johnstone. This one involves Frank Morgan, the Drifter, and a young Ranger friend, who go to work on opposites side in a brewing range war. Very entertaining.
24-56. Ahh, Johnstone is back with an action packed Texas Western. Lots of violence, but what do you expect of a man with the reputation of a gunslinger. I borrowed this e-book from the Sacramento Public Library through the Libby app.
This is by far my favorite book in the series because of its theme of close friendship tested almost beyond the breaking point and how two men handle the situation.
