Frida Kahlo par Frida Kahlo : Lettres 1922-1954

Rate this book

Magdalena Carmen Frida Kahlo Calderón was a Mexican painter, who has achieved great international popularity. She painted using vibrant colors in a style that was influenced by indigenous cultures of México as well as by European influences that include Realism, Symbolism, and Surrealism. Many of her works are self-portraits that symbolically express her own pain and sexuality.

In 1929 Kahlo married the Mexican muralist Diego Rivera. They shared political views, and he encouraged her artistic endeavors. Although she has long been recognized as an important painter, public awareness of her work has become more widespread since the 1970. Her "Blue" house in Coyoacán, México City is a museum, donated by Diego Rivera upon his death in 1957.

I was always suspicious about the cult some people had for Frida. The insertion of her face and figure as part of the pop culture made me believe that maybe she was more of an icon made to fill our desire for female rebellion, surrealism and freedom than a real human being... Oh was I wrong!!!

Reading her life through her own words - her dreams, hopes, aspirations and pains - opened my eyes to the amazing world of a remarkable woman. I cried and laughed with Frida. I understood her vulnerability and praised her courage to live with her heart and truth open to the world. Regardless of what anyone else thought.

I am now one of her followers and true believer that we all should be a bit more like Frida.
