Oh. I remember this one - I don't remember what happened to it, but I definitely had it - got it on a rainy afternoon in fourth or fifth grade (in October, November, March or April) at a white crackerbox junkstore that had popped up seemingly overnight in a field of weeds down by the railroad tracks in my hometown. Seem to recall the paperbacks were all a dime apiece. Had a dollar but could only find eight as the sky started to darken darker than it already was. This is the only one I remember. Funny and dumb of me, never got around to actually reading the damned thing (I probably ended up yard saling it for comic book money, or perhaps traded it along with some others in a two-for-one deal at another used bookstore when my James Bond novel search-find-hoard took off at its rapid pace)

Very good pulp thriller from the 30's. The Phantom Detective was a crime fighter much like the Shadow and The Spider from the same era. He was a master of disguises and his true identity was known only to Frank Haven, publisher of the New York Clarion. This time he's brought in by Frank to investigate murders connected to a 16th century count, thought to be a vampire. Recommended.
