Initially I was underwhelmed by this novella, all the characters seemed like spoilt insolent brats and the only one worth liking was Thomas ( the very very sad school secretary/slave) but somewhere just over the half mark the book gained momentum and became something worth recommending to my circle of book friends and not just to promote fledgling SA authors.

But it is nice to run into youth fiction that has a bit more meat, and isn't preachy or condescending to young readers. "The Goblet Club" is refreshingly (not to say relentlessly) dark, its

This multi-award-winning YA novel hurtles along, pulling the captivated reader with it. The tone is lively, but the deeds are dark in a hellish boys' school. Not everyone is who or what he seems to be, a sinister mystery unfolds, poisons are developed in secret, there's betrayal and a frank depiction of the effects of guilt - what more could we ask? ...more
