Ara Güler's Istanbul
Ara Güler's Istanbul is a unique record of daily life in the cultural capital of Turkey from the 1940s to the 1980s, captured by the award-winning photographer and accompanied by an evocative foreword by Orhan Pamuk, the first Turkish recipient of the Nobel Prize in Literature.
As the crossroads between Europe and Asia, Istanbul has lived through several empires and has a character that is as many layered as its history – something that Güler’s photographs convey with great sensitivity. In these remarkable black-and-white images, the city’s melancholy aesthetic oscillates between tradition and modernity.
Both writer and photographer were born in Istanbul, and each in his youth held the ambition of becoming a painter. Here, each in his own way paints a picture of his home town and captures its very soul.

When Ara Güler presents us with a view of the city, what affects us emotionally are the people inside it. Set against the city’s breathtaking scenery, those people can seem fragile than ever…

Really great artists are frequently very modest, even humble persons, says Orhan Pamuk in the introduction to the photo book Ara Güler's Istanbul.
Güler calls himself a photo journalist, but he is much more: a chronicler of his home town Istanbul since the late 1940s, a kind of archaeologist (since Istanbul has changed a lot in the last decades), but definitely also a great artist.
Ara Güler's Istanbul presents just a small sample of the more than 800,000 photos he took almost exclusively with his Leica, but they give a wonderful opportunity to catch a glimpse of the artist's most iconic works.
We see fishermen mending their nets, children playing in front of derelict Ottoman structures, ferry boats passing the Golden Horn, street vendors pushing their carts in the cobblestone streets of Kadıköy, a tram waiting for a man with his horse cart passing the rails. It's usually not the Istanbul tourists know. We see crumbling buildings and people who look tired from their everyday struggle to survive in this glorious city. Istanbul and its buildings are only the backdrop for a big stage: the drama of life with its difficulties, everyday routines and small pleasures.
Güler's photos breathe a deep humanity. The people we see on his photos, no matter how poor they may be, are never devoid of a certain dignity. And frequently there is a touch of magic there too, which is difficult to describe. Just have a look at his breathtaking photos.

Ara Güler's black and white Istanbul photos from the 1940s to the 1980s. Foreword by Orhan Pamuk. It has one of my favrourite Ara Güler's photo, too.

This is a beautifully-produced collection of photos taken by Ara Güler of a vanished Istanbul before prosperity took hold. Anything volume of photographs put together by Thames and Hudson will of course, be exquisite to behold.
I wonder why the editor chose Orhan Pamuk to write the forward. I know Pamuk's name may be more well-known to international audiences, but Yaşar Kemal's Turkey is much closer in theme to Ara Güler's than Pamuk's.
Here's another review of the book from Turkish Literature Month on the Global Literature in Libraries blog: https://glli-us.org/2017/08/01/ara-gu...

Although the title is 40 Years of Photographs, they are concentrated in the late 1950s, 1960s and early 1970s, giving a sense of a vibrant and human European city full of change but also of history. Although they are at opposite ends of Europe, a lot of the people in Güler’s photographs look very much like their Irish counterparts. And in any case they are just beautiful compositions. The book has an impassioned foreword by Orhan Pamuk.

One probably should have visited Istanbul before to appreciate the hüzün of these pictures.
Even though the pictures are interesting, and some are especially remarkable, as an introduction to Istanbul this is not the right book.

One wonderful homage to Istanbul!

Impressive collection of photographs on İstanbul and the human condition. Orhan Pamuk’s extended foreword is pretty good companion to the photos as well.
