I remember reading this as a kid and really liking it, so wanted to read it again so I had a review.

It was as good as I remembered. Definitely a more sobering, impacting tale as it is based on a true story. To think that she endured such hardship, but rather than getting bitter or quitting, made the most of it and enjoyed her life.

Ages: 10+

Cleanliness: does mention the scalping of Mary's family (she sees the scalps) and a few other violent incidents are mentioned. They're not graphic but seen through Mary's eyes, can be emotional for younger readers/listeners.

With each review, I provide a Cleanliness Report, mentioning any objectionable content I come across so that parents and/or conscientious readers (like me) can determine beforehand whether they want to read a book or not. Content surprises are super annoying, especially when you’re 100+ pages in, so here’s my attempt to help you avoid that!

This was a childhood favorite book of mine and while recovering from surgery I decided to reread a few favorites. This is an excellent book based on the real life of Mary Jemison and how she adapted to Indian life and lived happily with them.

I started reading this to my children a while ago but stopped at their request. The scalping was a bit distressing for them. I wanted an easy read though so picked it up the other day and enjoyed it. It really got me thinking about perception.

This is supposed to be a kids story but it read more like a history book. It was mostly facts although it was very interesting to learn about Mary Jemison. I would be interested in reading a real book about her.

Fascinating true story. The hardships and challenges that Mary Jemison overcomes in her life story are extraordinary. A few years ago, I read another children's book about Mary Jemison by Lois Lenski.

Very strangely written - but this story has always fascinated me and I learned new things about Mary and the Seneca Indians.
