I love Hollywood novels especially with behind the scenes stuff. This writer directed 16 films so he has that knowledge. Throughout the book I was thinking the book would have been close to a 5 but lost something because it was too long. Every main character has a ton of background and side stories. The book, his only novel, was published when he was 68 and two years before his death. It felt like he had a number of stories in him that could have formed separate books but that he realized this was his only chance and threw everything in to make more than 600 pages.

The ending made it lose all its stars. The resolution of the 2 main characters was okay but pretty unrealistic and corny. But what bothered me is that after giving so much background on the other three main characters they disappear at the end. Again, why build them up so much just to forget them in the end
