I have been wanting to read this book ever since I read Renee' Ryan's lovely sequel Heartland Wedding. Talented author Valerie Hansen starts the After the Storm: The Founding Years series with High Plains Bride. The story is full of action and adventure as we meet Emmeline Carter on a wagon train headed to Oregon with her mean father Amos Carter, her sickly mom Joanna Carter, a younger brother Johnny, two younger sisters Bess and Glory, and two orphans - twins Missy and Mikey. When the Carter ...more

The first book in the After The Storm: The Founding Years.

I just finished the six books in the After the Storm series and these next 3 books take you back to 1860 to the founders of High Plains, Kansas.

Will Logan and Zeb Garrison.

This is Will's story.

Emmeline Carter is traveling with her family to Oregon from Missouri. They are in the middle of the Kansas plains when a tornado hits.

Will Logan had met her in the Mercantile before the storm. After the tornado he finds he cannot rest until he knows

This book annoyed me on multiple levels. Skimmed after awhile. Too much going on with no answers.

I was so excited to hear that they were going to do a historical After the Storm series after reading the contemporary! I loved this first book in the series. I just love stories with wagon trains in it. Emmeline Carter is the oldest of her siblings and feels the need to protect them from the wrath of their father. The fact that their father is so hard headed that he doesn't listen to the concerns of others when they told him to stay near town because of the storm throws them into an emotional ...more

After the Storm
Book 1

A tornado hits suddenly as a family continues to travel west. The father's poor judgement causes Emmeline Carter's life to change forever. Emmaline is a strong female who has taken it up on herself to care for her sick mother, two sister, brother, and two orphaned twins. Her father is abusive and mean, but she loves him in spite of all that. After the storm, tragedy occurs and she leans heavily on Will's strong shoulders to get her and her family through the rough times.

I loved this book! Valerie Hansen's descriptions are so vivid and captivating that you feel like you are experiencing the storm and its aftermath right along with the characters she has created. I enjoyed the way the main character, Emmeline Carter, demonstrates that faith in God can give us strength to endure hardships, overcome doubts, and develop courage. I actually read the second book in this series, "Heartland Wedding" by Renee Ryan, before this one, but it did not diminish my enjoyment at ...more

Ultimately, this is a very sweet story set in 1860 Kansas. The heroine and her family are headed west in a wagon train when they are hit by a tornado. With her father killed, and the family left absolutely destitute, Emmeline must stay in Kansas. Not surprisingly, she finds a new life and ends up falling in love. It's a sweet book and it has its moments, but this is also the kind of thing that probably won't linger in my mind for more than a day or two.

I was really looking forward to reading this book. Sadly enough it fell flat. I just couldn't like the story. It's much to drawn out for my taste and the characters keep rehashing the same problems again, and again, and again. There was no tension build up and I have trouble finding a reason for the main characters to fall in love.
It was so boring I found myself skipping bits just to get through it faster. (and I never felt like I missed anything important).

I did not like the book because I did not like Emmaline because she was too hard headed for her own good. This caused lots of trouble for everyone. She was the family work horse; used to doing all of the dirty work for her abusive father and weak mother. I know the lesson in the book was about trusting in God, but I couldn't find any sympathy for her.

Val Hansen has written another winner. I love the characters in this story. And her setting is so real you can feel the wind blowing and smell the prairie grasses. I enjoyed every minute of the reading of this book.

Emma deserved to finally have someone take care of her. Joanna needed to stop laying in bed feeling sorry for herself and her miserable life and make it better. Even with some terrible people in town( Mrs. Johnson, her daughter and the Tully brothers) I would love to live here.

Well written, but seemed a bit long. Some parts do not get resolved in this book, so you have to read the others in the series.

This book is great! Can't wait to ready the next one to see what happens. It shows that hard times don't last. That in the end things work out even better if you just have patience and faith!
