This publication of the Association of periOperative Registered Nurses contains approved models, standards, statements, and practices, and outlines perioperative nursing practices and standards, in addition to recommended practices for hazards, equipment, and patient management, among others. Standards include patient care quality; administrative, clinical, and professional practice; quality and performance improvement; and outcome. For the 2006 edition, competency statements have been revised, and there are new position statements on correct site surgery, fire prevention, care of patients with an implanted electronic device, and entry into practice. Also new are guidance statements on avian influenza, environmental responsibility, the role of the health care representative, creating a patient safety culture, and updated standards for RN first assistant education programs.
