I fell in love with poetry when i was in college. Browsing the bookshelves one day, I found an old copy of one of Rod McKuens books.
He writes things so simply yet paints a heartwrenching picture. Some of his writing is laid down like a journal.... describing a trip hes taken, the women hes been with, things hes seen and thought.
He writes in a way that i can relate to. If you havent read anything by him yet, I suggest you do. You are missing out on some beautiful writing!
I just started rereading all of the two dozen books of McKuen that I accumulated over the years, starting when I was in high school, some 60 years ago! It is amazing how they still resonate with me, and some of the poems I recognize and remember word for word. That’s how much of an impact he had on me. I was fortunate to meet him at a book signing in the early 80s, and that was thrilling. And hearing him talk in person means that I can read him in his voice.
this collection of poetry on love runs a wide gamut from the expected to even " old houses " from one of my favorites. I was interested to see this 1969 publication references "Sunshine Supermen", echoing Donovan's 1966 hit "Sunshine Superman" in "The Adventures of Clark Kent". This surrealist ode is my other favorite here and interesting that McKuen reflects back another's song when so much of his writing was sung by others.
There was a time I couldn't stand McKuen's music so I was completely dismissive of his poetry. This book has been sitting on my shelf for years. Left behind by my ex-husband after our divorce. It called to me today though. While most are underwhelming, a few pulled some kind of wistful whatever of me.
I was quite taken with “Listen to the Warm,” so when I found this, I was excited to read more of his poetry. While a few verses really made me think, I wasn’t as keen on this collection as I was with the former. I would still recommend these poems, as the simplicity in verse speaks loudly to the reader.
Personal favourites: - To Pause - The Prize - The Meaning Of Gifts - Runner - "A loss..." - Apples - "Your body..." - Old Houses - Water Music - Tell Me How The Wind Blows
- The Distance To Monterey: "I wonder if you know how many conversations we’ve had so far with no words passed?"
- Late October: "Welcome is the thunder, if you go or stay."
I could hear the words he wrote. It was like magic; the waves, the wind when you are driving down a highway with the top or windows down. I heard the female voices and could picture their expressions in my head. It is a profitable book to carry with you.
I am very glad I picked this up from the school library and saved it from being recycled. McKuen is a great poet. Each poem is simple and that really packs a punch. He doesn't cloud his meaning with flowery language. The poems really ring true about love, lust, and even heart break.
