This is a non-fiction book of facts about every country in the world! It's set out in alphabetical order (by country) and the layout is the same for every country (may be useful for teaching about the formats of different genres of books).

The book provides a 'wide-angle' view of the country on a map (giving an indiction of it's geographical position in relation to other countries that surround it and a more detail map of the country itself which shows major towns and cities, airports, major roads and so on and uses the standard symbols we we expect to find on maps (good for map work). The book also provides a picture of the country's flag and a short passage on the history and provenance of the flag. Each country's climate, area, population, currency, religions and ethnicities and languages. There is also a brief overview of the given country's history, a description of it's physical landscape and vegetation, brief political overview and a 'Did You Know' section with a few interesting factoids.

It's and excellent book for many aspects of geography as well as having uses in modern languages, history and RE.

The book is very concise and contains a lot of facts that are presented in a clear and child-friendly way.

Whether you buy this book for your class or buy it for the budding Alan Wicker in your life i'm sure they will get plenty of use out of it! In essencse it's a serious reference book that is written in a way that makes it accessable to children!

I must admit that this edition is probably slighted dated by now so i'm probrbly going to invest in the most recent edition at some point!

Firefly World Factbook: An A-Z Reference Guide to Every Country in the World by Keith Lye (Firefly Books 2003) (912.0 +/-). Now this is a great source of trivia about each and every country in the world. That includes the ones you haven't even heard of yet. This is a fascinating book to browse through. My rating: 7.5/10, finished 2009.
