I am rereading this wonderful book about 6 years after the first time. The plot is interesting and doesn't just focus on the romance. It incorporates family and values which is great in a romance novel.

this had: bratty kids, misunderstandings that could’ve been avoided with a normal amount of talking, and a jealous villainess…but I ate it up anyway!

I will say, I liked how the heroine communicated on the big things and conducted herself with poise. she took on an enormous challenge but she wasn’t a doormat, she stood up for herself every time anyone said anything to her face. the hero was frustrating but I could see why he was floundering in his situation.

The very first romance novel I ever read - secretly, stolen from my mother as a young teen, of course! I wish I could find a copy of it now to see how it compares to what I remember.

This was a very romantic book. I loved how the characters began to like and eventually love each other in the most unpredictable moments.I recommend it to anyone who is willing to learn about the history and struggles behind love and how two strong, independence learned how to appreciate one another and eventually love as a whole.

This was one of the first romances I read as a teenager. Not too steamy...thank goodness. The heroine is a practice mail order bride trying for a fresh start in life. She is up against the memory of her new husband's deceased wife and the sister in law who is determined to make trouble.

Do I really love the book or do I just love the tropes included in the book??

Yess I enjoyed this. I enjoyed this a great deal. This is the plotline I was searching for and this genre is just my favorite.

Western Historical Romance. Marriage of conveniece. Widower with multiple children orders a bride. This is just packed with my favorite tropes.

I love family drama. Entering into a ready made family and exploring the struggles of being accepted as a new mother replacement for a perfect departed wife. Plus problems with the in-laws and conflicts with children. This is just what I was looking for.

To add to that, the H isn’t an asshole at all??? This is just too good. He appreciates the h. Compliments her. Makes her feel beautiful. You got to admit this is just rare with these kind of plots. Even though I get a bit frustrated with how lax he is with the discipline of his children, I can still commend him for not immediately thinking bad about the h, especially with a liar for a daughter constanlty villainizing her at every turn. I am somewhat proud of him.

I am so engaged with this plot. As I have said, I just love reading about family dramas and the manipulative sister in law and the liar of a daughter was fun to read. I just love getting pissed!!

In my opinion, they did not get what was deserved to them in the end. The sister in law should be forced out of town from embarassment or atleast ostracized by her friends. And the daughter should have not gotten away so easily. It would have been better if we got a full, heartfelt apology from her and was given no slack from her father and from the h. It disturbs me to think how she can make up stories so easily, and without a care that she is also hurting the father that loves her. Until the end, I could not warm up to Hallie at all. I wished for more remorse on her part.

In the end, this was a good read, not necessarily a very good book, since I noticed that the writing lacks some depth that I like in my romance books. It was a simple writing that lacks a bit of world building to me and the romance have a certain lack of a little something.

Neverthless, I am fully entertained!!

DNF at 33%. I started to question how this story could possibly turn itself around and if the rotten family members could be redeemed.

In my opinion, they were not redeemable. The two oldest daughters of the hero were nasty rotten liars. Telling horrible character damaging lies as two little 10 to 13-yr olds off the top of their head without a moment to plan ahead, without blinking their eyes…. Says a lot about their character make-up as a person and I could not see how such an evil heart could possibly magically switch to suddenly being a kind-hearted person. The Aunt Gretchen was just as bad (a clear picture to what the evil daughters will grow up to be like.)

So for me, the drama that the heroine was going thru and needing to overcome was btwn her and some punk ass step-children, a sister of her husband’s deceased wife and potentially all of the town women (believing the nasty lies told by the two girls, etc). I would have much rather to have seen the heroine going thru hurdles with her new husband, not children.

The husband… spineless and a worthless father figure.

I would have asked for an annulment, gathered my money and taken my chances on a second mail-order bride advertisement in a different town.

A historical romance story set in the late 1800's in Texas. Amity Becker is at her wit's end, she thinks she may be pregnant. Her spinster aunts would never condone let alone understand how that could happen. She has only told her best friend Dorothy and Dorothy has the solution to her problem. She has been writing to a man from Texas who had advertised for a wife. Amity could pretend to be Dorothy and go to Texas and be this man's wife and her problem would be solved. A good idea? Well, what else could she do? She packed up a trunk and got it to the train station while her aunts were out, boarded the train, and set out on her adventure. She needed a safe haven and someone who cared about her. What she got was a brooding Texan widower with five daughters. His heart was still his dead wife's. She has her hands full with wanting more than just a marriage in name only. How can she convince Clay that she could be more than that? A good read.

- badass heroine
- mail order bride
- heroine was assaulted, hence she agrees to marriage
- H has 5 daughters and loved his deceased wife dearly
- H is reluctant to show any love and acceptance to his new wife
- endearing how the "stepmom" in this case tried so hard to win her new family's love
- they have twin sons at the end

I liked how the heroine communicated on the big things and conducted herself with poise. She took on an enormous challenge but she wasn’t a doormat, She stood up for herself every time anyone said anything to her face.

I read this book last month I think, but I actually liked it. It was rather interesting to see how it panned out. I think it could've easily have been one of those Made For TV movies. It's the most non-offensive thing I've ever read. (then again, don't use that as a measure. I've read a lot of things.)

There's nothing graphic about it.

A few times I did want to wring the neck of the antagonist but otherwise, it's pretty alright. I'd probably read it again later.

It was a good read. I'm glad the miscommunication didn't last that long. And Hallie was a brat but understandable because of losing your mom and having a vindictive aunt in your ear.
