This is basically everything you could ever want to know about Bohemians and the culture that surrounds this notion. Joanna, who I went to high school with and is the only reason I went out of my way to pick this book up, traces the origins to Paris and talks about how the literary/musical types who were not interested in capitalism or material things made their way in New York at the turn of the century.
Good to read, if only to remember how much things have changed since the turn of the century
