Edmond Moore Hamilton was a popular author of science fiction stories and novels throughout the mid-twentieth century. Born in Youngstown, Ohio, he was raised there and in nearby New Castle, Pennsylvania. Something of a child prodigy, he graduated high school and started college (Westminster College, New Wilmington, Pennsylvania) at the age of 14--but washed out at 17. He was the Golden Age writer who worked on Batman, the Legion of Super-Heroes, and many sci-fi books.

In this adventure, Curt and his crew are first introduced to the evil Ul Quorn, the Magician of Mars, and his vicious partner, N'Rala. Hamilton was a master of fast-paced space opera adventure, and this one is no exception. Though they're more fantasy than scientific, his aliens are always interesting, and the backgrounds of the settings are thoroughly rich with detail. There was one point in the plot that gave me pause, when Curt devises a method of cheating at a gangster's crooked roulette game (Kimball Kinnison would have never done such a thing!), but I suppose it's forgivable since the future of the solar system was at stake. Captain Future was the premiere pulp science fiction hero.

In the spirit of radio/movie serial icons like Flash Gordon and Buck Rogers, Captain Future and the Seven Space Stones is pure, unabashed sci-fi pulp. The title character may not be the most charismatic hero to grace the genre, but his square-jawed do-goodery will be a nice diversion for fans of the genre. For the rest of you, your mileage will vary.

It started off Thanos and ended up Antman. Utterly brilliant and fun.

What brought a smile to my face? That here we see an early appearance of a pet that Hamilton will re-use almost a quarter century later in the pages of Adventure Comics, only then he will be Proty, the pet of Chameleon Boy, instead of Oog, Otho's pet. Those early adventures of the Legion of Super Heroes were one of the comics highlights of my misspent childhood.
Also, if you look at the cover and squint just a little you might see the outline of an Infinity Gauntlet. One of the many questions I'd ask Jim Starlin if I was ever fortunate enough to have a beer with the man is if how many Lensman and Captain Future books he read in his youth.

The pulp era SiFi hero, Captain Future is a more scientific version of Buck Rogers or Flash Gordon. He and his band of Futuremen are special criminal investigators for the Earth government and are similar to Doc Savage and his band of helpers. Great reads, recommended
