I like considering the needs of students as I develop plans for classroom discipline and lessons. I'm glad my principal asked that all LJMS teachers read it. I liked many of the topics, and especially liked those with *:
*Discover the power of internal motivation.
Eliminate Fear and external rewards
Minimize use of coercion.
*Teach Routines, rituals, and procedures.
Be enthusiastic, enjoy what you do.
*Build positive relationships with students.
*Create relevant lesson plans,
*Plan with the students' needs in mind.
Teach students to self-evaluate.
*Teach students about the components of behavior: body, feeling, acting, thinking.
*Teach less, teach deeply.

I'm already doing most of these things for most students, but found the reinforcement useful. I think this will help me buld positive relationships with my most difficult students and my co-teacher.

We read this in our book study group at school. Most of the teachers liked it overall, including myself. Would be good for a beginning teacher who's still trying to figure out a behavior management plan. I thought the beginning examples seemed a little contrived, and I disagreed with his philosophy on external motivation, but overall it was a good reminder of good teaching practices.

I was very disappointed by this book. It is organized around a series of scenarios with comments after each. I found the scenarios to be very contrived and exaggerated. There may have been good content in this book, but I could not get past the one-sided, exaggerated scenarios to find it.
