3 1/2 stars. Though targeted for juveniles, many terms are defined in the text, there are details of political positions, oral traditions and historical information.

The wealth and gold of the successive empire that held power around the great bend of the Niger River in sub-Saharan West Africa were legendary to the Arabs and Europeans. Conrad introduces their history, customs, legends and connections with their descendants in 21st century West Africa. His presentation is both colorful and filled with facts.

I wish it included more information about modern societies. While I realize the book is titled, Empires of Medieval West Africa..., it would have been nice to have a more extensive chapter on what happened after the medieval period. Recommended for ages 10 & up.
