I usually can't read books that are clearly driven by miscommunication (or lack of communication), but I kept at this one and I'm glad I did. It started out like a train wreck in that I was compelled to keep staring at: I had to wonder what Poppy would do next. I think I was about half-way through when I began not to be able to put it down.
I'm giving Love Struck three stars but I wish I could give it three and a half. It's a good read. One that I'd recommend for a rainy day at home.

Oh my lordy. This was a long drawn out book. There's all sorts of silly shenanigans that Poppy and Parker the main characters get up to in this story. All due to a lack of communication skills. I realize that Poppy's desperate machinations stemmed from insecurity, and this was meant to be funny. But it struck me as kind of pathetic. Poppy does some horrible faux pas as an image consultant. She gives some very bad advice to her clients and seems all surface. Parker isn't much better. Things don't start making sense until they both fess up to each other but by then I was totally fed up with both characters. I wish Guertin had made Poppy more likeable. Parker is an ordinary dude. I have to say the guys usually get the short end of the stick in these chick lit books. Most guys in chick lit books aren't portrayed very well. They're either clueless, jerks, selfish, or just dumb. But at least the guys are portrayed more normally than the ladies. I mean, who would really do everything Poppy did? It's so out of the ordinary it borders on the ridiculous.

I really wanted to like this book. I love the premise - a little like What Alice Forgot, but different enough to not seem like a copy. But, although the writing was pretty good, I couldn't get past how stupid and pathetic Poppy was. I get the insecurity, but she took it to a whole new level. And I really hate the whole "silly shenanigans due to miscommunication" thing, but this was even worse, because there was NO communication.

Chantel Simmons’ Love Struck tells the story of a woman who finds out—within the first chapter—not only that her wonderful, dreamy husband is cheating on her (and therefore neither wonderful nor dreamy, right?), but that he has been struck by lightning. Torn between her anger, hurt, and now fear for his life, she finds herself struggling to deal with the situation. Parker doesn’t even remember the affair ever happened; what would you do? Poppy decides she needs a makeover, while her husband seems to undergo his own personality transformation. Join Poppy on her hilarious yet embarrassing encounters with the beauty industry. Is Poppy’s focus on the superficial going to ruin any chance they have left? And why is her husband acting so funny? And how in the world is it all going to end?

If the characters feel familiar, it is because Parker is that perfect boyfriend you have or dream of, and Poppy shares that fear of getting hurt—minus the cheating part, and the crazy attempts to remake your body in a week, of course. But as Poppy learns, looks are not all that they seem.

Filled with humour and a world you can relate to, Chantel Simmons’ Love Struck will have you glued to your seat. In my case, it was a seat on the subway, two hours after having purchased the book, flipping page after page before realizing half an hour had flown by and it was time to go home. The next night, I stayed up past midnight just to read the book, and the next afternoon was spent in the sunshine, absorbing the last few chapters, just to make sure everything turned out alright.

But did it? You’ll have to read the book to find out!

Sorry to be the one to say the obvious, but I was love struck with Love Struck!

This novel tells the story of Poppy, a 27 year old who lives in Toronto and works as a style adviser. One day, her husband Parker gets struck by lightening and forgets the last 3 months of his life, which include having an affair.

The book follows Poppy as she tries to re-build her marriage after Parker turns into a different person, but also after learning of his affair, from the woman he was having it with!

It is a very tongue in cheek book and half of the things that happen in the book probably wouldn't happen to anyone in real life. It was a comedy of errors, with the biggest error being Poppy not communicating with her husband and trying to turn herself into someone she thinks he wants her to be.

I got through the book quite quickly, and that's partly because I really enjoyed it, and partly because some parts bored me and I skipped over them. There were several sections in which I didn't think it was relevant and lingered on the subject for slightly too long, but overall I enjoyed it. Poppy was built up to be a likeable character and there were times where I wanted to scream at her 'just talk to him!' She did some outrageous things in order to try and win her husband back and it was actually quite funny.

I would recommend this book to people who like an easy read - perhaps a book they can take away on holiday with them. I certainly enjoyed it and will look out for more books by the same author.

I wish I had known about Love Struck before now, before it came to Netgalley but, you know how the saying goes, better late than never! This book was hilarious and went by so quickly that I thought there was less pages because I ate through this in no time flat.

When I read the synopsis I thought wow that seems interesting and something I haven't read before. Poppy finds out her husband, Parker, is having an affair. She found out about it while getting her nails done and ran out of there with the pedicure shoes still on. Hilarious!

Later she gets a call that Parker is in an accident, he was hit by lightning and then the real fun begins. He wakes up and can't remember the previous two months or the affair. Poppy, who is an image consultant, decides to change how she looks into how the mistress looks. The things she goes through though, oh man it had me in stitches. Especially the spray tan incident!

This was definitely a light read but you got some serious issues with their relationship and the trust that was lost while they both lied to each other. I loved this book and like I said, it made me laugh and I even teared up towards the end.

This is a gem. A funny fabulous gem. Read it!

Another chick lit i'm giving 5 stars too! I absolutly fell in love with the concept of this book and it definitely didn't disappoint.

Mid 20's Poppy Ross discovers that her handsome and what she thought devoted husband has been having an affair, but when lighting strikes, literally and hits her husband and his mistress. When her husband wakes up he has no recollection of the affair and Poppy struggles to decide whether to just let it slide and pretend it never happened or confront him. She ultimitely decides to pretend it never happens but Poppy decides maybe she's not what her husband wants and his mistress was so she trys to recreate herself in her image.

This book is absolutely hilarious and heartbreaking from start to finish. I loved Poppy's character and found her antics and struggles to keep her husband satsified were down-right piss your pants funny, yes I said piss your pants. This story was like nothing else i've read before and its up there in my top 5 chick lit novels i've ever read!! Chantell Simmons is going somewhere in the Chick Lit genre and i'm jumping onboard. I can't wait for more novels from this author!

I have to say that I was fascinated by the premise of this second chances book. What if you had the chance to remake yourself? Would you take it? In the case of this fun, funny novel, the heroine does just that; and I laughed and sighed and cried along with her. The heroine wants to save her marriage to a cheating husband and in re-imagining herself she has the chance to look at what was wrong and right in their relationship. The plotline of an amnesiac husband who could regain his memory at any time was genius and this book is a whole lot of fun with a great message tucked inside. Well drawn characters, fast pace, witty dialogue and well drawn settings.
I would read more from this author who is able to make one think a bit whilst being highly entertained.

Seriously one of the worst books I've ever listened to/read. I listened to this as an audio book and I just can't believe how bad it is. I started it hoping for a cute romantic story, so yes, I knew it would be quite predictable, but it was not very cute at all. The main character Poppy is insufferable and selfish, as she even says herself at one point. I finished it because I hate giving up on a story, but honestly not worth my time.

Strongly reminded me of Sophie Kinsella's Shopaholic series. A lot of things were glossed over (Elin's visit to the city) and other places that dragged on (teeth whitening). A quick read with not too much depth or original ideas.

Short review. *Spoiler review* I thought the premise was interesting but the book itself not so much. The story is told entirely from Poppy are main character's point of view, I really wished the story was dual point of view instead of just Poppy's. It got tiring after a while of reading Poppy thinking the same thing over and over again. I didn't like Poppy I felt like her hiding what she over heard about Parker's alleged mistress discussing her relationship with Parker did more harm than good that, and her trying to change her appearance to look like the alleged mistress was ridiculous. It was hard to believe that she was a image consultant because not only did she give terrible advice to her clients, she herself follow the terrible advice she would give to her clients.

Even without having Parker's point of view I liked him way more than Poppy, it was easy to see that his near death experience had him rethinking his life, work and marriage. And wanting to make a change that was better for not himself but his marriage to Poppy.

*Spoiler Opinion* I think that Parker's assistant recognize Poppy as his wife and decided to make her believe that Parker was cheating on her after Parker rejected her. I wasn't buying for a second that she have never seen a photo/s of Poppy considering how head over heels Parker is in love with his wife.

Poppy is hilarious. She and Parker kind of embody who we all equally wish to be, know we are, and are thankful we aren’t all at the same time. We start the book and Parker is cheating with a hot intern, Sienna. Then, in a freak accident, Parker forgets the last few months of his life, thereby forgetting the affair and all memory of Sienna. Poppy from that point forward tries to imitate the style of Parker’s former but forgotten lover as she attempts to rekindle the marriage that she really didn’t think needed rekindling. Cute, hilarious, and embarrassing, this was an enjoyable rainy day read.

Most of her life Poppy has been “that” girl, you know? The fun one, the pretty one, the one who can always get the fun guys, the best jobs, the right clothes, and she never second guesses. Until she meets and marries Parker. In a humiliating series of events Poppy discovers there is a possibility her oh-so perfect husband has cheated on her with someone she considers on the same level with Angelina Jolie in beauty. Interestingly enough her husband has no memory of it after a freak lightening strike wipes his memory clean. From this point on Poppy’s journey is nothing short of hilarious and mildly tragic.

Isn’t it something we all do? We love someone so much we’re terrified we aren’t the right one for them, that someone else could do a better job for them and that maybe we might just make enough mistakes to make them unhappy with us. Sure, there are those of us who like to say we don’t rely on someone else to make us happy, but are we really being honest? Think about it. Yes, maybe we could be happy without that other person, but it’s something so completely different when you allow yourself to be loved by another. It’s not that you are dependent on them, but you do live in their love. Poppy has felt this way about Parker for some time, though her passion for that feeling may have faded just slightly since making their marriage vows. And when she learns of Parker’s betrayal all she can think about is what she can do to win him back.

In what I found to be somewhat a comedy of errors Poppy decides to “makeover” her image. What’s extremely ironic about this is that Poppy’s career is that of an image consultant. So nearly everything she does to “make herself over” is in complete contradiction to who she truly is. Some of the more laugh-out-loud makeover scenes happen when she goes to get a spray tan for the very first time, after getting a “Cher-esque” weave to have long black flowing hair in place of her short blond locks, and my personal favorite fake nails with bright red polish. Seriously, every scene had me laughing hysterically and everyone in my home wondering what I exactly I was reading.

The only fault I found with the book was that after some time Poppy’s character begins to be a bit annoying. After all the quirky scenes had passed there were points when I wanted to tell her to snap out of it and go talk with her husband already! In fact her mother and best friend make some similar statements to her as well.

By the time I finished I was grinning and happy to have gone on such a whimsical journey with Poppy and Parker. Love Struck will have you laughing out loud and constantly hoping, “please don’t do what I think you’re going to do.” Poppy and Parker’s story will also help you remember to value the relationships you hold most dear and take the time to help them remember how much you care for them in return. A great read for the coming summer and one I am so glad I didn’t miss.

A few months ago, writer Chantel Guertin made her YA début with The Rule of Thirds, a book that I loved. Having found out that she had written two books before that which were rereleased this September I became interested in checking them out. I was particularly interested in lovestruck because of its story, the whole concept of a woman trying to remake herself in the image of her husband’s mistress sounded pretty cool in a hilarious and maybe far-fetched sort of way. What I got in the end was a book that was both as funny and as smart as its main protagonist, Poppy.

I loved that this book took place in Toronto, it made me envy parts of Poppy’s life even more as I’ve always wanted to live in a condo in downtown Toronto. Besides Poppy the majority of the characters both male and female were quite likeable; there wasn’t really anyone but the “mistress” that did not have an understandable motive for what their behaviour that made them sympathetic . I did however found the parts where Poppy’s husband gets mad at her for taking birth control pills and assuming that she would go along with his sudden change of mind when it came to the baby issue. However I did like how the issue was dealt with, in fact it was one of the many ways that is book was a very realistic story of marriage and relationships. Both Poppy and her husband, Parker are good but imperfect people who really do love and value each other. The fact that after all that has happened they are willing to talk and try to work things out was just so true to life and is a good example of what a healthy relationship should be like. Lovestruck by Chantel Guertin is a very enjoyable read as long as one doesn’t take the various crazy antics of the heroine all too seriously. It is also a great story about how an unfortunate event leads a couple to rediscover each other and learn new things about each other in addition to learning how to appreciate the relationship they have.

I received this book from the Goodreads Giveaways.
I really enjoyed this book from beginning to end. It has a unique plot that I've never heard before, and I've read more backs-of-books than I'm willing to admit. This isn't the type of book that I usually read, but because it's so funny, it doesn't seem to matter.
Poppy herself has some fairly major flaws, evident immediately, and throughout the book. Everything I pray that she won't do this girl does, and it's so infuriating and most of the time cringe-worthy (in a humourous way). Her character does feel real, however, unlike many characters who are just vain and shallow with nothing else to them.
I do really love how Canadian the book is, and puts a bit of a different spin to Toronto living and showing the more vain and upclass side of it that I haven't seen much in books. You do, in my opinion, get that "I need to look good" vibe while in Toronto, though, but I think that's in any of the major cities like Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal.
There are multiple references to different street names that the reader who isn't very familiar with the area might not catch, especially when it's not listed so much as a road.
For me, it was like sitting down and getting drawn into a world that I was already comfortable with. I liked reading a well-written story from my country, and so close as Toronto. My one flaw I found is the reference of cottage country being "3 hours north." Three hours north lands you almost in North Bay; an hour and a half-two hours north from Toronto leads you to cottage country. That's just being petty, though.
It was a hard book to put down - you just needed to know what was going to happen to Poppy next. The writing allowed for clear, quick, and consistent reading. Definitely a book I'd recommend.

Originally Reviewed at Novel Escapes

This novel was laugh out loud funny and contained thoughtful insights about marriage. Poppy’s journey is both amusing and heartfelt. Her pain and confusion is palpable as she acknowledges her husband’s infidelity and tries to become the other woman she now knows he is attracted to, thinking it will fix her marriage. She does this while ignoring the situation with her husband who was struck by lightening and lost all memory of the last three months, when the affair started.

I laughed frequently during Poppy’s attempts at transformation and was cheering for her to overcome her insecurities, often times cringing at her decisions and found myself wanting to yell at Poppy and Parker throughout the novel. I cared about these characters and was rooting for them to figure it all out.

This novel captured my attention and I was eager to find out how Poppy and Parker’s journey would end. My only concern was that I found the beginning a little slower and I was worried I wouldn’t enjoy this book (Kathryn didn’t feel this way), but I continued reading and was pleasantly surprised. Once I became fully engulfed in their situation, I couldn’t put the book down, wanting to see what happens.

Poppy could be considered a Canadian Bridget Jones and she certainly had elements to her that made me laugh out loud with her antics and decisions, self doubt and insecurity. This novel portrayed her self discovery well and I didn’t feel it was too much of a leap as I have found with some novels in the past.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a good laugh and a light hearted read and I will definitely keep an eye out for future novels from Chantel Simmons.

I highly enjoyed Canadian author Chantel Simmons’s debut novel Stuck In Downward Facing Dog, so when Chantel contacted me about her second novel, I had to accept! This story follows twenty-seven year old image consultant Poppy Ross. Poppy finds out that her loving husband, Parker, has been having an affair with a co-worker. Poppy is devastated, but unsure how to proceed next. Before she can get her thoughts together, she receives a phone call- from the mistress herself! Parker had been struck by lightening while the two were out together, and was in the hospital. Parker had suffered amnesia, and can’t remember that last three months- including the affair. Poppy finds the mistress in the hospital, and becomes determined to give herself a makeover to be just like her. She figures this is the only way to save her marriage. But as Poppy’s efforts keep proving to be more and more disastrous, she begins to think her marriage is quite possibly over.

I thought Love Struck was comical, humorous, funny…need I go on? The charades that Poppy put herself through to try to transform into Parker’s mistresses were hilarious- from the talon fake nails that kept falling off, the stripper stiletto shoes, and especially the scene in the spray tan booth- I could not help but laugh my way through this book. There was a serious matter beneath all the comedy- that Poppy’s husband had an affair. I didn’t like that instead of just asking Parker straight out, the best option she could think of was transforming herself into someone she wasn’t. But it took that to help Poppy see who she really was, and in the end, help improve her marriage. Though I did kind of see how the affair accusation would work out, I loved the happy ending. Another definite recommendation from Chantel Simmons.

Poppy Ross believes she has the perfect life with her husband Parker, and, as an image consultant, she helps others achieve the same and become better versions of themselves. But when Parker gets struck by lightning and Poppy learns that he was not alone when it happened, but with a woman from work, and that he was having an affair with her, Poppy’s perfect life is shaken to its core.

The only thing is, Parker doesn’t remember anything that happened in the two months leading up to the lightning incident, including the affair.

Determined not to aid in refreshing his recollection of his mistress Sienna, Poppy makes no mention of her or the affair and instead sets out to transform her appearance from polished and professional to sultry and slutty in an effort to become more like the woman she believes her husband now desires.

But the hair dying, fake tanning, and cheap hooker-heels only seem to push Parker away and Poppy doesn’t know what to do to win him back. Is her mission a lost cause? And, even if their marriage gets back on track, what if he remembers Sienna and chooses her over Poppy?
What then? Will she become a twenty-seven-year-old divorcee?

I really enjoyed this hilarious and sweet novel about remembering what it was that first attracted
you to your spouse. Peppered with laugh-out-loud humor, Chantel Guertin shares real, true-to-life sentiments about marriage and how it is something that needs to be nurtured through quality time together if it is to endure a lifetime. A perfect read by the pool or at the beach, grab a copy of Love Struck along with your sunscreen before you step out into the summer sunshine. You'll be glad you did.

27 year old Poppy Ross has the perfect life and the perfect marriage. She has her dream job as an image consultant, and a dream husband, Parker. Things are going perfectly until she discovers that Parker is having an affair with a sexy co-worker. Before she can confront him, however, he gets struck by lightning and loses his short term memory, including his memory of the entire affair. Poppy sees this as an opportunity to save her marriage and reinvent herself as the sexy, sultry woman she believes Parker wants.

I really enjoyed this book and thought it was the perfect chick lit novel. It had a really unique premise. I mean, how many times have you heard of a man getting struck by lightning and forgetting his affair? That’s what I liked about this book – fresh, fun ideas.

I also really liked Poppy. Her reaction was so different than expected which makes for a good story. I would think most women would lose it or go off on their husband in this event… at least I would! At first, she is panicked and not sure what to do, but then she makes her decision and goes full force… and it is funny! She has a kick ass job too! She’s an image consultant and helps people with their wardrobes and appearance. Cool! What a unique heroine! It’s also interesting to see her transformation(s), in an honest story about being true to oneself.

I’d wholeheartedly recommend this funny, sweet, and fast read to all fans of chick lit.

Finding out your husband of three years is cheating on you is shock enough, but before you have time to react to that devastating news, you find out he has been in a freak accident. That is the way Poppy Ross finds her day going. Rushing to the hospital, while still reeling from the affair news, Poppy finds out that her husband, Parker, has not only been hit by lightening while in the company of his mistress, but he has lost his short term memory. With it unclear as to how long before Parker regains his memory, Poppy goes about reinventing herself. The model for her reinvention? Sienna Somers, who just happens to be the woman her husband was cheating on her with.

Chantel Simmon's latest book, "Love Struck" is a definitive "what would you do" as Poppy frantically tries to make herself over into what she imagines is the woman that Parker wants. Her career as an image consultant starts to suffer and her relationship with her best friend is strained as Poppy struggles with her makeover. Add ex-boyfriend, Colin, to the fray and Poppy's life is spinning out of control. As I read the book I went from feeling sympathy for Poppy to needing to see her get knocked down a few pegs to cheering for her to come out on top again. What I really enjoyed about this book was the fact that all the characters, though definitely flawed, were extremely likable. Even Sienna, knowing she was the other woman, was interesting. I loved the book and have added Chantel Simmons to my list of must reads.

I received this as a Goodreads Giveaway and loved it!

Poppy, an image consultant in Toronto, overhears a conversation in a nail salon that reveals her husband, Parker, is having an affair with a co-worker, Salina. Unfortunately, this happens right before Parker and Salina are both struck by lighting and taken to the same hospital. Parker suffers from amnesia, and having met the 'other woman,' Poppy is determined to win him back... by making herself over into the image of Salina. Needless to say, this isn't a good plan and anything that can go wrong does! Unfortunately, no one can hear you when you say 'What are you thinking!' as you read along...

The characters are totally believable and all of them, including an associate t.v. producer who happens to be Poppy's old boyfriend, a charming mother of triplets and two parents you'd want to call your own, share bits of wisdom and add to the fun, as Poppy and Parker learn what marriage is all about. If you're married or in a relationship, you might find yourself asking; 'How far would I go to save it?'

I received this book as a Goodreads Giveaway.

When I started reading this book, I didn't think I was going to like it. It started out slowly and it took me a couple of weeks to pick it back up again while I read some other things.

BUT, once I really put my mind to it and started reading, I really liked it. I have to be honest and say that up until about the last 50 pages of the book, I didn't really like Poppy as a person. She was shallow, self-absorbed, selfish, and thoughtless. I'm kind of thinking that was the point - it took the entire book to turn herself around and become that woman that she was meant to be and that both she and Parker deserved.

It turned into a great story about how marriage is never perfect and how you both have to work hard at becoming the best person you can be for yourself and for the marriage. And it is never, ever easy and there a lots of mistakes made along the way. At least, that was what I got out of it.

I was glad that I read this and would definitely read more from Chantel Guertin.

Really fun book with a great concept; Poppy catches her husband, Parker having an affair with a glamorous dark-haired co-worker, Sienna, and moments later the two cheaters are struck by lightning! Parker all of a sudden can't remember anything of the last few months, but Poppy certainly cannot forget his mistress and spends the next two months transforming herself into the raven-haired, fake-nail wearing, spray-tanned vixen. Poppy's theory is if Parker was in love with Sienna, then maybe he wants someone more like her so rather than remind Parker of his affair, Poppy tries to become what she thinks (or who she thinks) he wants. Chantel Simmons takes themes from classic chick lit and spins her own unique tale with an unforgettable plot and characters who will stop at nothing to get what they want. Very entertaining. I was hooked from page one. Quick read. Recommended to all who love chick lit.

This book just goes to show how much insecurity and miscommunication can ruin a relationship. I've always been a firm believer in honesty so when they lied in the book I was just like "NOOO! Stop it."

Poppy being insecure because she found out her husband cheating is probably one of the most normal reactions, but she takes it to the extreme here by trying to look like this 'other' woman. I felt sad on behalf of this woman, but your husband cheating is never your fault. There is a reason behind it, sure, but if he is unhappy he should tell you or ask for a divorce before starting something with someone else. It's not that hard being honest.
