Starts out as Cold War intrigue at South Pole as US and Russian search teams look for downed satellite, but there is a "mole" in the US team who kills its members and sabotages equipment. Then it becomes a survival drama as survivors battle the cold, fall into crevasses, get frostbite, starve; then it degenerates into science fiction-horror story as men are frozen alive, and parts fall off, gangrene sets in, there are drownings, broken necks until everyone is dead. The "mole" is never revealed. Unenjoyable reading; detailed descriptions of frozen landscape hard to understand. Do yourself a favor and skip it.
