Jacob’s always been a dutiful son. His new mate is anything but.
Co-leading the Saint Coven with his twin sister is the legacy Jake was born into. He takes all his responsibilities seriously, especially his new Council appointed mate.
Cane is the mayor’s son. In a last ditch effort to put him on the straight and narrow, the mayor asked he be mated to the most mature and upstanding paranormal possible.
Jake is a strong leader, but Cane’s rebellious streak and the explosive chemistry between them might tempt him to the wild side.
This is kind of a continuation of the other book but with another couple. The enemies are the same, the couple is cute, I like the first book more.
In this book we have Jake (we are friends, I can call him Jake) and Cane. Cane never got anyone on his side so for him his marriage would be the same. He didn't have a choice to participate, his mother decided for him. Again, this is insta love, but the books are really short so to me that can be forgiven. Cane starts to develop feelings for Jake and once he sees that Jake just want the best for him instead of the control he was used to he finally feels he's in the right place.
Until he becomes a target. Turns out not everyone is happy that Cane found his happy place.
I like how the storyline keeps going It's like lil episodes. They were cute. I liked book 1 better, tho. Derek sounded so cool. I love how accepting Jake was. He found Cane legal ways to fight.
The next one is going to be so juicy. It doesn't sound like they like each other 🤭
My review will cover all three of the novellas in this series as it's really just one big Prologue to the On Guard one as far as I can tell.
I liked each pairing, their premise of being a matched mate is the same but each short follows a slightly different path to get the two men happily coupled up.
There's a main thread running through each too which means minor plot points left open in books one and two, a kind of conclusion in book three to that particular element, but then a new one opening up at the end.
Each of the romances is pretty sweet though, I think I liked book two's pairing best as there was a fair bit of snark in that one.
2.5 The first book was consumed fast while the afternoon still dragged on, so why not read the next one. It struggled a bit with the series concept where we have 3 couples have the same starting event and later meet again to prepare the final fight in the 3rd book. So we start again with the arranged mating and drive through to the big celebration event we already know from the 1st book just with a different couple. Have to say I liked this couple better. They don't follow the usual insta-mate archetypes but I wouldn't call them real characters and didn't expect them to be. After all that was one of the reasons why my mood was set on this kind of story.
I'm loving this series of novellas. Cane caught my attention in the first one so it was great to have his story this time around. Jake was immediately a win for me. He was on Cane's side from the get go. He never tried to stop Cane from being happy. I really liked the pair together
A WARLOCK CALLED JACOB runs at the same time as book 1 and this time it follows another mating between warlock Jake and human Cane, the mayor's son. Like the previous book this is pretty much insta-lust and insta-love but it was entertaining and a quick read. I liked Cane's charm and sex appeal and he was a good match for the more reserved Jake. I'm curious to see the next couple's story and see what happens with the anti-paranormal group that has been harassing the mated pairs.
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Favorite Quotes:
“You’re sexy. In that whole good boy way.” Leaning close enough, he could feel Jake’s breath rush over his lips, he whispered, “Makes me want to dirty you up.”

“Us being together has nothing to do with who deserves what. You’re my mate, and I know we’re at the beginning of the road, but I can already tell you I don’t want to walk it with anyone else.”
It's kind of surprising how you can have a fully motivated cast of characters in such a short story. Same as with Derek's book, I would have liked a couple of more scenes of Cane and Jacob becoming closer and Cane getting to know the coven. Overall it was pretty well fleshed out though. I'm looking forward to Leander's story
Second book in the Mated to the Human Series. Also found on KU.
Much like the first book you have two vaguely unwilling participants to an arranged marriage. Jake, the head of the witch clan, and Cane, the major's son. You know right away this is not going to be quite as insta love as Derek and Hollis in the first book. Cane seems, well.... Cane is an a$$hole basically. He's self centered, does alot of that "why didn't my mommy love me." kinda self talk and in general does alot of stupid stuff in a passive aggressive attempt to get mommy's attention. Meanwhile Jake is wondering exactly what he's gotten himself into.
But this is a novella, so the two quickly warm up to each other. It was an okay read. Just barely a 3 rating.
4 stars… This one is about Jacob the Warlock and his new mate Cane the human son of the mayor in their clearly fucked up town. I enjoyed Jacob immediately being someone Cane could lean on when it’s clear he’s never had that. The soft moments between these two was so good and again I wish this book was longer.
2/5 on spice. 1/5 on kink. 1/5 on tears. Very curious about the vampire one that comes out tomorrow (don’t tell anyone but vampires are my fav 🧛♀️)
I'm really enjoying this series. I think my favourite thing about it is that whilst there's a definite strong element of arranged marriage to it, it's not as black and white as that because the paranormals get to choose from a selection of humans and actually end up choosing someone who works. I don't think it's a matter of 'fated mates' so much as fate and instinct on who would be a good partner for them (even if perhaps they're a bit confused by the choice). It worked really well for Hollis and Derek and the same happened with Jacob and Cane. On paper Jacob and Cane are as far apart as you can imagine. Together though they worked really well, especially once Cane understood that Jacob genuinely cared. I felt awful that that was a new concept to Cane, but I was so glad that he finally had someone in his corner. The moment when Jacob actually listened to what Cane wanted to do with his life and then actively said he'd help him achieve it was just perfect. I'm intrigued as to how the next story will unfold but I'm already kind of sad that this is going to end. I know we've got more to come in a spin-off series but I wish we'd get more books from this series and I'm sad that there's only one more book (surely once they see how well the first three work, the Council will push to have more arranged human/paranormal matings?).
This second book felt a bit smoother than the first. Some of that is no longer having the need to explain everything, the other part is that the relationship clicked well and yet managed to not feel as rushed this time around.
Following much the same timeline as the first book but from this different perspective, we meet Jacob (a warlock) and Cane (the human match). Unlike in the first book these two aren't immediately falling over each other. Though there is chemistry and attraction, Cane has some trust and freedom issues that he needs to work through to truly be with Jacob. But luckily Jacob is in it for the long haul, and wants to communicate and work together to find a path to happiness and love.
There is a bit more reveal of the threat going on to the mates, though not much more than the first book. Things are still tenuous by the end and hopefully will manage to get a bit more resolved with the last, and most mysterious, mated couple!
Despite its short length, Jacob and Cane's novella had a satisfying mix of character development, excitement, and romance. I loved the goody-two-shoes/rebellious one pairing, and I thought it was so sweet how Jacob wanted to look out for Cane even after knowing him for such a short time. The two of them had natural chemistry from the start, and once Jacob's protective instincts came out I was sold on the feelings they were developing for each other. It made me so happy to see Cane get to pursue the career he was passionate about, and though I wish I'd gotten more closure about the masked men who tried to hurt him, I can't deny it was sweet to see how settled and happy he was with Jacob's warlock family.
**I voluntarily read an ARC of this book. This review expresses my honest thoughts and opinions.
Jake and Cane have me bewitched…no, bewarlocked…eh, let’s call it, under their spell! I had such fun with these two.
“We, uh, paranormals tend to be pretty territorial over our mates. Demons and vampires, especially.” Cane tilted his head. “But not warlocks?” “Oh, we definitely are.” Jake’s deep brown gaze held him captive. “I am.”
Yessss, and I for one am loving the possessive vibes but what I really liked the most in this one is that Cane is also not one to stand aside. He’s just as fierce and willing to protect those he cares about and I loved every bit of these two falling for each other. Looking forward to the next, as I want to know what’s happening with HAP, and what’s up with our mysterious vampire.
Sometimes you find family in the form of a marriage. Sometimes you find support in a person that you never thought. Sometimes you find love with part of that found family and supportive husband. This is what Cane found in Jacob/Jake. When you’re there for someone when no else can be. When you’re supportive when no one wants to be. And when you’re patient to that new person in your life who is all yours and now your husband, who find LOVE. This is what Jake found with Cane. Such a wonderfully written short story. Now to continue to find out who is over HAP. Humans Against Paranormals. Nope we still don’t have any idea, only speculation. So onward we go to Book 3. This book gets a 5 star ⭐️ rating. 💜❤️
This second story in the Mated to the Human series is a fun romp with Cane, the Mayor's son and Jacob, Warlock, Tavern owner and Coven leader. As with the first book, this wasn't a path the human took and Jake does everything he can to make Cane feel welcome, but Cane is a bit of a wildcard and Jake soon finds he has to rescue him from himself as well as the Human's Against Paranormals. The story runs mostly concurrently with the first book and there is some overlap with events, from a different perspective. I enjoyed this short, fun, steamy(ish) story and I'm now looking forward to Leander's story.
A warlock and his human mate will fight for their HEA.
This is a fantastic second book! This is a continuing storyline; so please read the first book. Old friends are here. I was drawn back into this world. Jacob and Cane pulled me into their lives. Yes, there is danger. But friends and found family band together to combat it. And don't get me started on the sexy times...too hot! This book is short enough to read on one sitting. Believe me, you won't want to put it down. I can't wait for the next book. I need to know what happens next.
A Warlock Called Jacob is the second novella in the Mated To the Human series. Jacob is a warlock who co-leads the coven with this sister. He agrees to a mating, a mating with the mayor’s son, Cane. Cane isn’t given a lot of choice. His mother wants him to straighten out, but he wants to cage fight. This somewhat continues on from the first book but also with some overlap. I loved this pair more than the first if that possible, I loved how Jake had Cane’s back no matter what! Overall, a fantastic story! Cannot wait for the next one!
This feels like opposites attract fated mates, but are they? These guys were thrown together in an arranged mating. No word on how they were chosen for each other. Jake is determined to make it work. Cane isn't exactly trying to sabotage it. Maybe test Jake?
The main conflict is against a hate group, Humans Against Paranormals. There is no resolution of that conflict in this book. This is part of a series, so maybe it's in the next book.
Overall, a fun ride, even if I found the romance disappointing.
I like the way these books are written, each giving a slightly fuller picture of what's happening than the last one. I like the dynamic between the characters in this book but do feel it went a little too quickly. Jake is shy at first but warms up very quickly. Cane is a bit jaded but soon figures out that not everyone is out to get him. Though the story was good I felt the character development was a bit rushed. Though I know it's just as short I really want to read the next book. These stories do definitely leave you wanting to read the rest.
Enjoyable, but it didn’t resonate with me the way Derek and Hollis’s story did. In the first book we really got to see Derek’s hellhound side and there was more action. This one was slower and there was only one scene where we saw Jake in full warlock mode, and it wasn’t during Cane’s underground fight. Like the first book, I thought this should have been much longer to really develop the characters, their relationships and the overall plotline. And this also ends with a plot cliffhanger as they pursue the hate group.
Continuing the ongoing storyline from book 1 but focusing on the Warlock, Jacob and the underground fighter, Cane. While their relationship was a little slower, I still felt that Jake and Cane were a good match. There is another attack on a human mate by HAP. The three supernatural/human couples get together to devise a plan to protect their mates and to bring down HAP
***** POV… third person
Standalone or series… book 2 in series don’t recommend as standalone as there is an ongoing storyline
This is book 2 in the series of Mated to the Human. Jacob, a witch, mated Cane, the son of the mayor and human. The first night of being mated, Cane goes to an underground fight club. When Jacob realized he was there, he went to save him. Great story of how 2 men worked their way to their happy ever after. Looking forward to the next book in the series to see how this author finishes the story arc.
Teased with glimpses of this couple in the previous book, this was enjoyable fast read. Jacob is the more responsible Warlock leader whilst Cane is the rebellious human. Matched together, these two need to learn how to make their mating work.
I loved how caring and protective Jacob was towards Cane and let him pursue his dreams in a more safer way. I’m looking forward to the next book in this series.
In the second book of the Mated to the human series, Cane, notable MMA Cage fighter is mated to the warlock Jake. It starts off with tension though the chemistry is obviously there and Cane soon finds his mate will support him whatever he does. We also see Derek and Hollis from book one as well as a gargoyle and other cool creatures. It's light, fun and sexy.
This is a paranormal romance, the second book in a series that should be read in order. This was a short but active story with a couple of steamy characters. There was more in this story; I was surprised how many details were shared in book one covertly about book 2’s couple! I’m looking forward to the third book and hopefully a third HEA!
Now I’m hooked on this series and my TBR is now on pause while I read this. #worthit I really enjoyed Cane and Jake because, compared to Derek and Hollis, there was a lot for push and pull. It was also so fun to meet Calliope and the others in Jake’s life. Thoroughly enjoyed this installment and am headed directly into Merrick and Leander’s story!
I came here straight from a Hellhound called Derek since I had to read more about Jacob and Cane and they didn't disappoint. As another mated pair in the human/paranormal mix they also went into it blind and it was also a fantastic pairing with Jacob being the warlock and Cane the human. The plot with HAP is a current thread in the books and will spill over to the third book and I can't wait to see the mated pair kick their butt.
