Nikki Giovanni uses all of her poetic lyricism to journey through the history, meaning, tradition, and power of African-American spirituals. Giovanni shares how lyrics, many of which are familiar to all Americans today if not worldwide ("This Little Light of Mine"; "Kumbaya"; and "The Whole World In His Hands" to name a few), were coded messages and expressions of slave life in the American South before the Civil War. I enjoyed reading Nikki Giovanni's thoughts about the spirituals and what double meanings were being expressed through these songs. I'm surprised by how few of these songs I know. We sang "He’s Got the Whole World In His Hand" and "Welcome Table" in elementary school. I learned "This Little Light of Mine", "Kumbaya", and "Joshua Fit the Battle of Jericho" somewhere, though I don't remember exactly where. I've heard references to "Follow the Drinking Gourd" and "Jacob's Ladder" though I don't kno ...more

I am not sure there is a book quite like it on the market. It was original in some ways. I enjoyed it. Written beautifully and with much research.
