One of my favorite things about Diamond is Unbreakable is how intimate it feels. As the story unfolds, we keep getting to see new landmarks added to the map of Morioh town. Progressively, you start to develop a sense for the town's layout as each "mini arc" adds a new location on the map. It's super charming and fosters a genuine affinity for the place. Morioh begins to feel fleshed out in a way most fictional locations don't. It's a place I would want to visit.

Related to this, is the way "battles" have changed. No longer are "enemies" a string of assassins who all serve the same master and share the goal of killing our heroes. Instead, they're just residents of the town. Some good, some bad. Very rarely do they want to kill anybody. Instead, they go about their lives as they already planned to, just with the addition of a stand that turns their activities up to 11. Because of this, the kind of stands that can appear and the ways they can be used are even freer than they were before. Because "enemies" goals can vary so much, the win conditions for the stands can become specific. Making the encounters that much more exciting. Instead of "I want to kill you and here's how my stand gets me there" the conflict is "I want X and my stand can do Y to achieve that". Stands are freer to serve as extensions of the user's personality. So much the story takes on this slice of life approach where the characters happen to have superpowers that turn the heat up.

Case in point, Kobayashi. He just wants to make a quick buck by scamming people. He achieves this via his stand, The Lock, which weighs people down the more guilty they feel. If he didn't have this stand, he'd still be doing the same thing. But the addition of a stand turns his story into a dynamic back and forth puzzle. The story is still this light-hearted slice of life structure, but it has been run through the filter of stands.

And as a result, Diamond is Unbreakable is a joy to read. I've never been much for "slice of life" stories, but the sheer quality here has me hooked. I love the cast, I love the town, and I just want to see what creative and ridiculous new situation they have to get out of next. It's fun. It's charming. It's clever. It's wholesome. It's Diamond is Unbreakable.

Which means that when shit hits the fan down the road, it feels so much more impactful.

Memes in this volume:

This wasn't in the manga but I think it's at about this point in the anime, and I had to include it.

Not including the Duwang translation bc of an ableist slur (even if it's misspelled) but fortunately that wasn't part of the translation I read :)

Three stand users are the main characters events center around them; Tamami, Hazamada and Koichi. Yes, Koichi get a stand and he is developing both his character and fighting styles every chapter.
