Blaikie is the commentator that all commentators footnote when looking into 1 Samuel. Having collected a number of commentaries on this book of the Bible to get a good sense of the lay of the land, Blaikie was missing, and it became more and more evident that I was lacking a resource all the commentators had. Imagine my surprise to discovered the book (a two volume set) at the publisher's table at an assembly I attended. This was clearly an act of great good providence as I was in the midst of preaching through 1st Samuel.

This commentary is very complete, its takes some very conceptual themes and places eloquent and helpful words around them. Blaikie is faithful to the Word of God and gives a very fresh insight into the meaning of the text. It is very satisfying to be able to pick out his influence in the works of other commentators.

While not the single reference a preacher ought to have, it makes a great one for personal study.
