Not exactly what I was looking for/expecting, but an interesting read--and now I've read a book penned by three generations of the Seavey clan. That factoid makes me happy. :)

One of the great thing about mushing is that everyone has their own way of doing it, and this book is a glimpse into Mitch Seavey's philosophy and techniques. For me, the most useful parts were the sample training schedule, the info on morning brothing, and the section on forward orientation, and there were also parts I didn't agree with and wouldn't use in my kennel - I imagine that every musher will get something different out of reading it.

This book is packed full of solid, practical information on raising & training a world-class distance dog team. However the tone the author takes with the reader was at turns dismissively presumptuous and aggressively defensive. I can see how some might find the tone humorous, but I found it made the book a slog. It was worth the slog. But barely.

Mitch Seavey tells it like it is. His humor and matter-of-factness make you finish this book. Think you know how to train a sled dog? Umm, think again, unless you've run the Iditarod!
