"Drive Without Fear" is the culmination of 36 years devoted to helping frustrated people overcome their fear of driving. It is unique in that it is written to help those afraid to drive address their fears as no other book does.
I've been reading this for a while now, a few pages at a time, which is mostly because the writing is pretty wretched. There are some useful sections, though, if you learn to just skim the stories of old ladies who are terrified to drive; I particularly appreciated the clear discussion of how to stop freaking out about the right side of your car. And most importantly, reading this book is starting to empower me to just create the driving environment I need, with new rules like, "No talking while I'm trying to get out of the parking lot."
I found this book while looking for resources to help my Fear of Driving or Driving Anxiety that I have developed in the last few years. This book is helpful to me. The author describes people like me: middle aged women who developed a phobia about driving. it is reassuring to know that there are others like me. I think this book was originally written in the 1950s because the author mentions many clients (he taught driving) who never drove until their husbands were ill or had died. this book only gets 3 stars because there's a lot of repetition and haphazard writing. This renders the book Monty python-esque which could be comical, but the material is too dry.
A few helpful bits of advice or reminders. Mostly, I wound up confused by the phrasing and the sparse illustrations, and don't feel like it reduced my anxiety at all.
