Get Fuzzy #10

Dumbheart: A Get Fuzzy Collection

Rate this book
Bucky B. Katt is leading the charge of the Highlands Kittyscouts. Bolstered by his roommates Rob Wilco (decked out in a borrowed hotel bathrobe and a Burger King crown) and Satchel Pooch (protected by a colander helmet), the trio from Get Fuzzy are ready to entertain their readers with another collection of their antics.  Bucky's crazy schemes and snarky attitude play off the good hearted Satchel and the exasperated Rob to endless comic results.

Darby Conley is an American cartoonist best known for the popular comic strip Get Fuzzy.

Conley was born in Concord, Massachusetts in 1970, and grew up in Knoxville, Tennessee.

While in high school in 1986, he won a student cartooning competition. During his Senior Year at Doyle High School (now South-Doyle High School) in Knoxville, Conley was voted 'Most Talented' by his graduating class. He attended Amherst College, where he studied Fine Arts, drew cartoons for the student newspaper, played rugby, and was a member of an all-male, jazz-influenced a cappella group, the Zumbyes. (Fellow cartoonist alumni of Amherst include FoxTrot creator Bill Amend and the late John Cullen Murphy of Prince Valiant fame.)

Like Rob Wilco, the human protagonist in Get Fuzzy, Conley is an enthusiastic rugby union fan, playing during college and sustaining several injuries that failed to diminish his passion for the sport.

Before becoming a cartoonist, Conley held a wide array of jobs: elementary school teacher, art director for a science museum, lifeguard, and bicycle repairman. This eclectic collection of professions is reminiscent of those held by Douglas Adams, whom Conley has mentioned as a comedic influence.

Conley, an animal rights activist and vegetarian, lives in Boston.

Another fine collection of comics featuring Rob Wilco, Satchel Pooch and Bucky Katt! Bucky is up to his old tricks again: tormenting Rob and Satchel, dreaming of eating monkeys, having delusions of fame and fortune and coming up with various money-making schemes. Mac Manc McManx makes his return, along with Chubby Huggs and Fungo Squiggly, and a few new characters are added to the mix: Stank Lloyd Wrong, the feline architect; Foodar, the cat with food radar; and Shakespug, the rubber-glove wearing Pug who talks like Shakespeare.

One of my favorite comic strips and this collection didn't disappoint once again!

and more nutty antics from Shakespug, Foodar, Chubby Huggs, and the rest of the gang. Good times.

I was completely unfamiliar with this comic strip, despite the fact that apparently it has a large following. I enjoyed it for the most part, though not as good as some. Hard to compete with artists such as Breathed, but I kind of liked both Bucky and Satchell. I have a thing for Siamese cats anyway. I think I will try to pick up some of his earlier books, as I got this one accidentally.

This is my favorite collection so far. Poor Satchel takes so much abuse though!

Despite being 10 years old, I find all the republican/democrat jokes to be spot on. I'm not sure they were balanced but it was nice to see both sides lampooned.

I have loved the Get Fuzzy comic since I was given an advanced copy of the first one when I worked in a Waldenbooks. I have always described the comic as being "Garfield's" grunge cousin. Bucky is a cat you love even though he says things you hate. Satchel his pooch sidekick is very naive and gets taken advantage of by Bucky multiple times. The great thing in this one is Satchel is coming into his own and starting to fight back. Their poor owner seems to be just along for the ride most times and tries to keep the peace. It's a very different type of animal weekly comic and it just drew me in.
